Viral issues can also cause loose stools.

Also if you are using Magnesium Citrate, you can change to Magnesium Glycinate

which does not cause loose stool.

,

It could be that the magnesium and your other efforts are paying off

with better gut health. He may be absorbing more nutrition and actually

metabolizing more of the magnesium you are giving. Try reducing the

dose of magnesium a bit and see if that ends the loose stools. He might

need just 300 mg a day instead of 400 mg.

He might not need that much magnesium any more. Try reducing the dose

to 200-300mg per day.

Yes, very possible.

For my son, giving a supplement when he no longer needed it, generally

caused a return of the problem that the supplement initially resolved.

Hey:

You might also want to look at the GFCF foods you are feeding him. Many of

the gluten " subs " in particular don't contain much fiber and that can slow

them down as well.

That said, we use magnesium citrate!

Magnesium

Hi, I just a had a lightbulb moment due to a previous post, my son has been

on enzymes for about 41/2 months, and GFCF for a month. His BMs have very

recently gone from 3-9 times a day to once a day maybe. So, I'm thinking

underlying magnesium deficiency has been exposed. Is there a preferred form?

Glycinate? Citrate? Must it be given with Calcium? if this is redundant I

apologize. Libby

>>Must it be given with Calcium?

If you are trying to address a magnesium deficiency, give the

magnesium apart from calcium by about 2 hours [or more]. Calcium

needs magnesium for proper absorption, but the calcium will interfere

with the absorption of the magnesium.

There is a difference between oxide and citrate. I think, Citrate loosens stools

and I think oxide works the opposite. Maybe someone on the group can

post for sure if there is a difference.

Actually, magnesium oxide, being insoluble, is far more likely to

cause loose stools than a soluble form of magnesium such as mag

citrate. The soluble forms are more bioavailable, so if one is

supplementing magnesium for a deficiency, then the soluble forms sre

the way to go. If one is supplementing for constipation, then an

insoluble form might be preferable in the short run, but it would not

be absorbed by the body as well.

Hi I read your post and was just wondering why you using the magnesium in

such high doses and what results have you seen using it. I was at the health

food store and they recommended it for constipation, I didn't buy, so now I

wondering why and what results you have experienced with it. The lady that

tried to sell it to me said this brand was tasteless and odorless ??? Please

let

It is a mineral, so you can bake it into things if you want.

I mixed things into peanut butter and honey for a while.

Hi-Is there a magnesium that is less likely to cause loose stools (or more

likely cause constipation?). We have a real problem with loose stools and

mineral supplementing makes it worse. Thanks, Pam

In 2 weeks I was able to get him off of Miralax. I don't have

perfect recall -- but I think I did 500mg for several days, then

took Miralax down to 12mg (from 17-20mg), then took Miralax down to

every other day -- but stool was too firm, so took Mag up to 750mg,

then stool was too loose, cut out Miralax entirely and he was fine.

He gets on average 750-1000mg of magnesium per day. If it's a

heavy fruit day I can cut it back a little. I use magnesium citrate

most of the time, but have been been trying 250mg crushed magnesium

oxide and 500 mg citrate and that

seems to be working fine. Tried calm child (icky taste), cal-mag

fizz (ick) and kirkman's has been the best so far. I was going to

order oxypowder but I'd rather try a pill or two before I fork over

nearly $50. I'm hoping to test in a few weeks to make sure his

calcium/magnesium and potassium levels are OK.

Even though it appears that this is a high dosage --I've found

nothing that makes me worry that this is causing any harm.

BTW -- probiotics haven't made any difference that I can tell.

Enzymes might be helping too -- at least the smell is MUCH reduced.

I'm going to order No-Fenol -- I've heard that has helped some kids,

and I received several as samples and he loved the taste. I wasn't

systematic enough with the samples to see if they had any effect.

And for the record -- not GFCF, just got tests back from enterob and

everything was negative - no gluten or casein intolerance.

Hi there,

I am new to the club and have been reading all the postings. This one caught my

eye because I just had an experience with magnesium myself and thought I should

share it with you.

While getting biomed tests done on my 2 year apraxic son I also had some basic

levels taken on myself just for fun. The test showed that I was very deficient

in magnesium. The MD suggested a supplement for a couple of months. I did this

and then again was tested...the levels had risen but not to the appropriate

level so she suggested continuing with the meg. So I did. 2 or 3 weeks later I

began to experience heart palpitations and over 3 days they became increasingly

worse. To the point where I was experiencing them every 30 seconds. I went to

the emerg and was put on a heart monitor and given several tests to see what was

going on with my heart. (By the way I am 36 years old and in good health) I

asked if it could have anything to do with the magnesium supplementation and

they answered that the level look okay in the blood tests. They could not find

anything else so after a few hours of observation they let me go home and

suggested I see my MD first thing. At this point I stopped all supplements

except one capsule of magnesium a day. I saw my MD and asked again could the

magnesium be causing the problem her answer was no I was only taking a

relatively small dose. She set me up to wear a heart monitor for 24 hours to see

what was going on. The results showed a couple of palpitations in that 24 hour

period. She felt that more mag was needed. I waited several weeks before

increasing the mag to see if the palpitations would resolve themselves. They got

better but did not completely resolve. Again she told me that if I would take

more mag that I probably wouldn't have any palpitations at all. So I began to

increase the dosage from I capsule to 2. Within 2 days the palpitations were

more frequent and stronger. I jump on the internet and discovered that the

symptoms for magnesium deficiency were the same as the symptoms for too much

magnesium in the body. The clincher for me was a note made that a person with

too much mag will have decreasing blood pressure. Since the beginning of taking

this supplement my blood pressure had been steadily decreasing in fact the last

was 90/;60. I knew I was overdosing my body with mag even though my numbers did

not indicate too much mag. I have since stopped all mag and the palpitations

have disappeared. It took 2 1/2 months to return to normal. Moral of the story

be careful with this supplement especially with children. Your heart jumping

around and missing beats is not pleasant and potentially very harmful.

FYI,

Even though it appears that this is a high dosage --I've found

nothing that makes me worry that this is causing any harm.

BTW -- probiotics haven't made any difference that I can tell.

Enzymes might be helping too -- at least the smell is MUCH reduced.

I'm going to order No-Fenol -- I've heard that has helped some kids,

and I received several as samples and he loved the taste. I wasn't

systematic enough with the samples to see if they had any effect.

And for the record -- not GFCF, just got tests back from enterob and

everything was negative - no gluten or casein intolerance.

dosage? I was told and I will research that you have start out

gradually, since you have already been there.. I thought I would get

your recommendation.

FYI,

Elaine

No, it's the magnesium itself that relaxes the smooth muscles of the

bowel. You could try giving it in divided doses instead of all at once.
