Ruth,

There is a good concentration of magnesium in the artesian water I drink.

Throughout the day I refuel with water, about 3 or 4 bottles. I do not have

muscle cramping.

I take magnesium - when I remember - I started taking it last year at the advice

of my nutritionist as I was having cramping (and am doing a lot of activity, and

magnesium deficiency is a known cause of cramping in athletes). I checked with

my doctors, and they indicated that there is no contraindication (nothing wrong

with taking) magnesium.

I noticed that when I am active, the magnesium seems to help with reducing the

cramps. However, I (and my doctors) are uncertain as to whether or not this is

a placebo or real effect. Regardless, they told me if it worked, since it

wouldn't harm me, to continue taking it.

I take 300mg a day. I have taken it in two forms, I prefer the EAP2 variety

with meals which are 100mg capsules so taking 3 a day, but I have also taken the

slow release single capsule form when I can't get a h old of the 100mg more

natural EAP2 capsules.

Thanks for the reminder to re-stock!

Ruth,

I take 225 mg of Magnesium Citrate 2 x's a day for muscle cramps. It

doesn't alleviate the cramps completely, but it is definitely worth

taking it. Even my neurologist asked me if I take magnesium for

cramping. So far, I have not found anything that works as well as

quinine did, but that is on the Black Box so that is no longer

available. My neurologist prescribed Gabapentin for my severe

cramping, but I did not like the side effects so I stopped taking it

after a 2-week trial. However, other CMTer's take it without

problem, so I know it works for some. I, also, try to keep my legs

really warm while I am sleeping and wear Smartwool socks during the

day. I have not found the perfect solution, so I welcome others

comments.

Kirkman Labs has a chewable. Not very strong but worth a try. I have a bottle

here, open but little used. Cover shipping and I'll mail it to you. Exp

10/2010 but will go to waste. My son swallowing. I've had better intention

myself chewing them but.... If you don't want, I'll keep working on them. I

also have a cup to send you if you want. Didn't you say your child has problems

swallowing. I bought this cup to help. Didn't do the trick. Think still have,

need to dig.

Just email me off list and give me your address. Clean home, only a bun, non

smoking.

I have heard of magnesium citrate and oxide, but what is magnesium elemental?

I saw a bottle of liquid magnesium flavored with mango juice. The ingredients

listed magnesium elemental. My son likes mango so I thought it would be a

possibility.

We struggle so to get him to take magnesium. Now I am trying to sneak Natural

Calm into drinks but he only takes a few sips and the rest is poured out. Such a

waste. He really needs the magnesium. Without it we return to the constipation

issues.

Elemental magnesium is the amount available for absorption by the body. For

example, oxide is less absorbable than citrate. This article says that magnesium

lactate is highly absorbable and neutral tasting:

There are other forms of magnesium:

Thanks for the information. I am learning and understanding so much from you on

things I feel I should already know but don't.

> Dana,

> You said something about not being able to take magnesium until you took some

other stuff.

Taurine was required here.

>>How did you know it was reacting?

When I took magnesium by itself, it gave me a massive massive headache [did I

mention it was massive?]. Taking it with taurine caused improvements and did

not result in headache.

>>What did you take before that for constipation?

Depended on why the person was constipated. If the constipation was related to

yeast overgrowth, I gave anti-fungals. If it was related to magnesium

deficiency, we suffered until I found the taurine connection.

I was reading in Andy Cutler's book on what type of Mag. is best. He talks about

elemental, but his focus is on chelating.  Says  mag. along w aspartate or

malate,  helps potassium absorption.

Magnesium deficiency can cause anxiety, muscle tenseness,(extreme cases tetiny)

wow! low potassium inhibits biochemical transformations, causes muscle cramps -

need both to stop it.

Mag. helps w 600 biochemical processes in the body itself.

Have to be monitored by a doc., if take high doses of potassium as can cause

dangerous heart conditions.

If have fibromyalgia or angina, & mag causes loose stools w lower doses, it's

potassium wasting. Many of us have that, w urninating more from mold.

Many have difficulty absorbing, use mag. sulfate: epsom salt.

Says taurine deficiancy can cause mag. deficiancy in the 1st place. As a person

w anxiety, I notice low potassium & mag. malate  helps. You can get a headache

from mag if don't have enough taurine.

Taurine caused nausea & pains in my left abdomen for some reason, so quit it. I

had IBS, sensitive stomach so, have more reactions than some of you.

Citrate is a negative ion, that's needed for  mag. & calcium which are positive.

Citrate reduces risk of kidney stones. Hard to keep a balance.
