Do you serve his food on a regular plate or a divided one (aka picnic

plate)? I ask because many autistic people have visual issues with food

all on one plate. It looks (to them) like one amorphous mass of food

(not real appetizing) and is confusing, and thus untrustworthy and

scary, into the bargain. This caused our son to quit eating almost

entirely when he was younger. We got him a picnic plate because where

my husband worked (a daycare for adult brain injury and Alzheimers

victims) they used them exclusively and for the same reasons. It worked

like a charm, and he started adding foods at the rate of one every month

or so.....just so long as it came on a divided plate or just one food on

one small plate. It took him a while to cope with stews, casseroles,

and multi-ingredient soups, but eventually he added these too. He

still, at almost 24, will use his fork (or finger) to make sure there is

plate visible between his food portions, and he eats stew one veggie at

a time. :) But the only things he *won't* eat are broccoli and cauliflower.

You might want to try a divided plate with your guy and see if it will

work for you. :)

My .02, of course. :)

We've tried separated plates, seperate bowls etc. Even though I can

appreciate this myself! LOL I hate my food running together *gee..

profound huh?* Its the food itself...examines it. Like say, he

once in a blue moon will eat Swiss Miss tapioca pudding (only that

brand, only that flavor) but inspects each cup, each spoonful to make

sure there are enough 'spots'.

Fries.... not too done, no burnt ones.. not too long or short.

doritos... not too much seasoning on each piece, whole pieces are

preferred.

You seeing what I'm meaning? I don't think its the 'serving' of it,

but the food itself. Jello scared him to death... it jiggled! Dont'

mention the word jello around here ;)

His latest thing *less than a week* is something strange. Canned

Popeye's Spinach!! Chopped only (though I've bought the other and

chopped it myself with a knife and fork). He CHOSE this because he

loves Popeye cartoons and honestly believes that eating this will

make him strong. So EVERY day for the last 4 days, he's eaten

spinach. I've served it in various bowls, containers etc to see if

that was an issue....so far no.

Should have seen the aids with him that had to 'try' his new food.

One begged me NOT to make her do it ;) My child's revenge is

sweet... they urge him constantly to TRY foods LOL

thanks Annie.. will keep thinking on this too :)

Our kids sure

put us through the hoops, don’t they?!!! Whatever it takes….to keep balance….sigh….I’ve

had one of ‘those’ weekends with Beth. DRAMA…STRESS….TEARS…ANGER….FEAR….CRISIS….all

those things, between her girlfriends and guy friends and boyfriend…she’s

on the phone all the time, plus one friend stayed overnight Friday (from her

old school) and another girlfriend Saturday night (from her current school). I

think part of it…a small part, is that she is exhausted, too. But

interpersonal relationships are SO incredibly dramatic with her….HIGH

DRAMA….her principal even threatened the high school class saying she has

had enough of this HIGH DRAMA….but I don’t think that’s going

to make much difference. It’s IN them. They can’t help it!

Never a dull moment.

Sigh,

maralee

In a way, Beth is making great gains in interpersonal issues.. but I

STILL don't envy you hon :) I like my quiet weekends, self contained

dramas...mostly short cinemas LOL

My middle son did get to spend time at a new 'friends' house on

Friday. His staff took him because this guy is also a client, they

met during the Summer skills group for teens. My DS was excited

*overly* to go after school.....and from all reports they got along

famously. Computer game geeks...both of them! Soooo, my son's been

stressing over the 'possibility' of how this one game that won't work

on his computer MIGHT work with the patch this kid told him about.

oiy! I need to brush up on my video card lingo! LOL

I'm in for the stress week next week...visit to the Mito Clinic

*possible needles* for the youngest; AND they found a flu vaccine for

him for Thursday. By Friday..... I'll be in seclusion (aka...hiding)

(((HUGS))) hang in there....tomm is Monday

LOL
