While we are on the subject of tonsils.......

We were just at Childrens Hospital the other day for Gretchen's routine ear appointment. She had tubes when she was 1 and as of a few months ago she still had her right tube in place. She has had 3 ear infections since December and her most recent one flared up just last week.

1) The doctor could not see the tube in her ear.

2)She flunked her tympanogram. She has never "passed" her tympanogram so I am not concerned, however the doctors said the tympanogram results indicate fluid trapped behind her ear drum.

3) She did fine on her behavioral hearing test and appears to be hearing the tones and whistles they tested her with.

4) An xray indicates that her adenoids may be obstructing some of her airway.

The doctor wants us to come back in 2 months to repeat the tests. If the fluid has not cleared up by then they want to either put the tubes back in or take out her adenoids out. We will be very proactive since Gretchen is really making some great progress in her speech and we don't want to lose the forward momentum.

I'll be seeking my pediatricians advice as well as schedule our 2 month visit with a more senior doctor at Childrens. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions from their own experiences with removal of adenoids?

Thanks in advance.

Inga,

Davey has had 6 sets of ear tubes. He had his first set when he was 9 months old. We took his adenoids out last Jan 2005. Whenever Davey's tubes come out, we replace them. We usually notice his speech declining and when we take him to the ENT, the tubes are out. When he has an ear infection, the tubes are out. Our ENT said the fluid interferes with his ability to hear. It is like trying to hear under water. Sometimes the hearing tests, both sound booth and tympanograms are borderline, but we see (hear!) such and improvement in Davey, that replacing the tubes is so worth it! When his ear canals are big enough, the ENT wants to put the t tubes in, but his canals are still so small that he has to use the infant size. Our ENT also told us that the recovery for tonsils is yucky, and he would prefer not to take Davey's out unless absolutely necessary. He does great with just the tubes. He talks so much we have to tell him to quiet down!

Good luck!

Hello,

I haven't posted alot but I do read all post... About the tonsil and adnoid thing.. My Caitlynn is 5 and we had her tonsils and adnoids removed in Dec... and it was a god sent. She sleeps so much better and not all of that tossing and turning.. She doesn't snore and her morning breath is sooooo much better... Her recovery was a breeze.. She ate chips the day it was done.. by the way it was done outpatient... The only time she complained was when she woke and the ENT said that was because she was dry.. She never quite eating... I really feel like it has been the best thing we have ever done for her...

The ears are another story we have NEVER had an ear infection... WOW that is so good to say... when they did her tonsils they went in and checked her ears because she has such small canals they wanted to double check everything... and do a little cleaning and it was great...

She did have alot of mucos built up behind her adnoids because they were so large...

I hope this helps some of you!!!
