Guest guest
Des, If your question was meant for me, what type of school is my son in now? Well, he's not in school now. He was in public high school if that is what you mean. The Austic school I have mentioned is only a few blocks from my house. I have thought about sending him there however, my biggest concern is the emotional outbursts and behavioral problems of the other kids. The majority of the kids in there are at the low end of the spectrum. I have been told they do not seperate the kids into different groups and place an " assortment " in each class. My son has never been a behavioral problem and has always received praise from his teachers for his show of respect of others in the class. The more I think about it the more reservations I have about the idea. Thanks to those of you that have given me insight to that type of environment. I really don't think it is for him. Question now is, what do I do with him? I am very confused by the homeschooling thing. I don't have a clue what I am doing or what direction I should head in. HELP! I have looked at numberous programs but nothing seems to fit the bill. I would like to create my own but dont know where to begin or what subjects I should cover. Any ideas, suggestions or comments? Anything anyone could pass along would be greatly appreciated! Thanks, Loreal
Guest guest
Hi Loreal… We have a school that caters to AS kids about an hour away. My hubby and I visited it 2 years ago when we were searching for a school. They had an ‘assortment’ of spectrum levels represented too, for sure, but they did place the AS kids together at the middle school class and the high school class. I thought that would have been the best environment for our daughter, but it was full when we finally received approval from the district. So we ‘ended up’ at a much closer school that was 2nd choice. But we’ve found it was the best thing after all! It’s been a great experience and we’re very happy there, with an ‘assortment’ of mental/neurological challenges’ represented in the classrooms. Beth’s compassion has grown for others, her maturity has grown, and she loves school, her teacher, and many of her classmates. I wouldn’t shut the door on that school until I visited it myself. Or maybe you’ve already done that? maralee re: new and in need of answers/HELP Des, If your question was meant for me, what type of school is my son in now? Well, he's not in school now. Thanks, Loreal Loreal; I hope I'm not repeating myself from yesterday. I have been rushing all week, not good for trying to keep organized! My eleven year old, As., OCD, high anxiety has been Home Schooled full time for a year now. We have not used a specific curriculum because some types of work really frustrate him and he is way above in some areas and below in others. We do use Touch Math, plus other sources. reads a chapter per day from a chapter book. I read to him each day. He draws most days and practices his Trombone. He usually does Geo Bee (National Geographic) on the computer. He usually watches 'Assignment Discovery', great show, and sometimes we carry the thyme over by further research. A good resource is the E.D.Hirsch book " What Your ----Grader Needs To Know " . Mon. he will begin a six week science course with other Hs. kids, he is also in a reading discussion group 5-6 kids. I have to go will write more later...do consider joining AUT 2 B HOME, look up Tammy Glaser autism home school, you can join through her site...Talk later, Gail
Guest guest
I feel for you. Knowing what to do with schooling can be so intimidating. In regards to homeschooling curriculum, have you looked at " Bright Apple Sepcial Ed Catalog " and " Remedia Publications Educational Materials Catalog " ? They can give you some ideas on materials to use.
