just a couple more things to add....my son also had severe leg pain which was attributed to the Lymes (the pain is similar to arthritis) and, there are more than one Lymes test -- I believe there are four -- depending on where you liveFrom: awremail <awremailyahoo (DOT) com>Subject: Vitamin D Deficiency - need help urgentlyTo: EOHarmyahoogroups (DOT) comDate: Thursday, December 17, 2009, 12:08 PM

My 14-year-old son (NT) has a significant Vit D deficiency (11.8 ng/mL). He has been blown off by doctors for years, who diagnosed "growing pains." After missing three days of school because of trouble walking, a neurologist told me he was faking to get out of going to school! Fortunately an urgent care dr. has the smarts to run a Vit D test. The trouble/pain walking happened about two weeks after recovering from H1N1, so I'm figuring fighting the virus took what little Vit D he had.

He's also on an antibiotic for a bacterial infection that showed in his bloodwork. He ran 101 degree fever last weekend and has fluid in his ears. I'm not big on antibiotics, and his Lyme test came back negative, but I'm not convinced it isn't Lyme, so I'm trying the antibiotic.

The urgent care dr. prescribed 50,000 I.U. of Vit D twice a week for two weeks, then 50,000 I.U. once a week for another four months.. I asked the pharmacist, who thought it was a high dosage. Is there a nutritionist here who could speak to that? He weighs about 95 pounds.

Next question - the urgent care dr. says this has probably been going on for years, and doesn't think it's dietary - that he is not absorbing Vit D (and possibly other things). I'm afraid it is affecting his growth.. He's in the 15th %ile for height but so was his dad at this age, who around this age finally hit puberty and is now 6 foot tall.

My question - I want to take him for testing to the right doctor. Should it be an endocrinologist? The urgent care dr. referred me to an infectious disease dr, but wouldn't say what she suspected, which is terrifying me... Should I go to an orthopedist to have his bones looked at? I have an appt. w/an ortho at Children's Hosp. The urgent care dr. is also wants to test for Vit. B after the antibiotic is done. The ped. is calling tomorrow after researching what to do - I gave him holy heck for neglecting to ever consider Vit D.

I'm not looking for treatment (other than Vit D level) or diet - I'm looking for a very direct line to figure out WHY he is not absorbing - somebody with the brains to run all the right bloodwork and tests. Diet isn't going to help if he isn't absorbing nutrients. Once we get the reason, then I can work with a nutritionist (although he is a good eater - loves salads, vegetables, fruits - not so hot on red meat, but has great iron levels).

Thanks,
