Guest guest Posted March 17, 2006 Report Posted March 17, 2006 Hi, Everyone....Dawn....are you charting his behaviors all day? Does he seem to be more wild half an hour after and before meals. It may be reflux. We never found out about Gareth's till he was ten.....by then his esophagus was raw meat. Is his abdomen distended and hard....possibly bowel issues. When Gareth was 15, he had to have hip surgery. By then his right hip was worn away to half the socket. The Dr said any 'normal' person would have been complaining of severe pain and in a wheel chair. Not Gareth!!! Gareth just got braces for his ankles in January. He was basically walking with his ankles turned in and almost on the ground because of his flat feet. After he wore them for a day or two he said " Mom...feet don't hurt no more. " As many times as I have asked him over the years if his feet hurt, he would always tell me 'no.' After he got the braces, I think he finally realized that his feet did hurt him.....God alone knows for how long. The one time he had a severe bladder infection, I found out because *I* insisted on the Dr doing a urine test. He had been potty trained for over two yrs and all of a sudden started pooping and peeing in his pants......going off to hide in the corner to do it. I wanted to share this with you because our kids don't always understand pain and how to deal/relate to it....except through their behaviors. Believe me, I understand you and your concerns......I truly wish we had answers for you. Unfortunately, most of G's major medical issues were found by coincidence because he could not relate the pain accordingly. Keep charting...... Take care, Everyone. Margaret Quote

Guest guest Posted March 28, 2006 Report Posted March 28, 2006 Hey Dawn, You were certainly right. Today I received a call from the Leader of the support group who brought us together as a team at the Challengers Baseball game and wanted to thank me for making the parents understand about their kids and they were so impressed how we comfort each other, they do not feel alone and looking forward to the next game. I had mentioned to the person whom called me to contact an OT whom I know who specializes with SID and of course mention my name to discuss about Sensory Integration. Then I had mentioned 2 other people for future presentation on Social Stories, the other one on The Power of Positive Reinforcement, Using Behavior Analysis there is another one but I rather speak to them in person in regards to RDI. Have to a bag of interventions as each child is different and the parents could check out what is available in our own city that might help their kids or at least to understand something. Watching them brings me memories of what I dealt with when was younger. Right after the game I had rushed to our local AU support group meeting because one of my friends was not going to be able to attend and she has a son who is an adult under the spectrum and she wanted to make sure to get the ball rolling for the parents with adults under the spectrum. Yesterday and today some more compliments that they can not wait until April's meeting and a pleasure meeting me, they've really missed out on so much. Some of them after the meeting had followed me out to the parking lot for my contact info. : )I guess I should have some of those cards with my info. Another parent who attended the meeting for the younger group could not wait to share how many attending were there because of me, as I highly recommended for them to attend and listen to the speaker who I adore so much. In a way I was upset as I wanted to be there, but told them that there was just too much going on the same day, at least they had the opportunity to attend and boy did they learn new info. Speak about having a circle of friends and best of all they are not alone, which I like. Supposedly the name they had given me was " Cherub " . I'm really a shy person and will not talk to anyone until someone makes the first move but glad that I did not come across on what I thought, close call, thanks for your support of comfort. Today at The Movement Program which is held at a University, the student had heard about doing wonderful at the game that he can not wait to go out and be his buddy, this would be part of his internship. Other students had overheard and I told them that many kids could use some buddies. I'm really praying that they can make it out there so that the other kids could have someone to guide them. They are such a joy to watch them having fun. Your welcome in regards to the GI site, do hope something helps at least to understand for when 's doc ends up telling you something you already know that he is on the right track of exploring any physical aspect. So I leave with this, just the thought of it. Hope you're able to review it. If you need a laugh, this is it. Someone ought to play this at DAN and Autism One! http://www.cbc.ca/airfarce/vidplayer/AF_single_player.html?/season13/051 202m & amp;playerType=wmp Irma,17,DS/ASD > > Oh Irma, I have a feeling you did NOT come across as " do this or do > that " to these parents, I have a feeling you helped them a great > deal as you help all of us!! Guest guest Posted April 15, 2006 Report Posted April 15, 2006 Hi Dawn, Thanks for the well wishes. No, I am not feeling all that much better. I should have gone to the dr last week but I was trying to avoid another bill. I have never had this hang in so long. I keep hoping I will wake up one morning and feel fine. I have PPT's all next week and I don't think I can do it. I suppose I will be at the dr's on Monday. Guest guest Posted April 17, 2006 Report Posted April 17, 2006 Hi Dawn, I am actually feeling a little better, not great, but better. I made the first very easy quick PPT of the week this am. Zeb woke up this am with a huge boil on his inner thigh walking bowllegged. My guilt is kicking in. I put some ointment on it and by the grace of God he let me put a bandaid. He can walk without it rubbing. I sent a note to excuse him from PE and dropped him off at school thinking the school nurse will deal with it and who would you think I bumped into at another school PPT, the middle school nurse was at my meeting. The school hasn't called yet so I think he's ok. I will give my gut another day and see how I am tomarrow. Thanks for thinking about me. Of course Donna will have to come so we know that we'll be eating well! And Carol can lead a workshop on " How to make everything you see in the catalogs that costs way too much! " And Joan better poke her head in so we can all give her the big hug we want to for saving our sanity by forming this list. Oh and I guess she can make sure we're all eating healthy too! LOL! And all the kids will be accounted for with the door and window alarms! ( I guess I'll hide the soap, lotion, potting soil, chalk, and glue though) LOL! Hampton Roads has a lot to offer that's for sure. But if not here, then I'll host it in Maine in a few years after we build our beach house on the bold ocean! We've got the land, just need a little mooooola to build the house! Maine is incredible, you'd all love it! Thanks for nominating me Carol! Believe me I am not looking forward to having to take her off of it cause I don't have a clue what we're going to do about the gastritis. He's probably going to want to do an endoscopy (Woozle) before anything. The problem now is that the iron supplements and all the other junk she's getting to fill up the holes is hurting her stomach more than she was without Prevacid so it's a mess. I am certainly not anti-Prevacid- it made a huge happy difference in our lives. I'm just on a minor mission to warn anyone whom may be on it longterm at a high dosage (or not) to keep watch on the possible nutritonal problems that may present as " mysterious " behaviors. > > happens to be one of those kids who always has the " extremely rare " reactions to everything. > > I just finished a search on the ABMD list for biomedical interventions in Autism and alot of regular autistic kids seem to have had side effects from the Prevacid type drugs. I don't know that many " only " DS kids who are on it. Truly, when we first put her on it we were thrilled at the peace and quiet and lack of moaning and groaning all the time. > Sherry > > Quote
