Guest guest Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 Hi Brigid, I am in Dutchess County New York, we have lived here for 7 months. My experiences with BOCES have been horrible!! At first I had in a PEACCE program, an autistic program in the middle school, the other 5 children in the classroom happened to be very high fuctioning with aspergers syndrome. The teacher made it painfully clear that she did not want him in the class. (thats a very long story) , I ended up having to pull him from the class. He then was home with no placement for 7 weeks. Alot of the placements they were offering me were not apporiate for kyle. He is now in a self contained classroom, that teaches life skills, but does do some educational goals. The only thing I like about it is the teacher seems to be wonderful. However it is not the placemnt I would have picked given a choice, is in the 6th grade but this classroom is at a High school. In addition he has to get up ridicules early (5:30 am) as the bus picks him up at 6:15 am and he does not get to school untill 7:10. Where are you in New York?? Viola Mom to Tammy 21, (southern conn. state university) Tania 18, (West Virginia University) and 13, DS AND PDD(ons) Brigid.....Gail can tell you about her experiences with BOCES...she's in Elmira. Where are you in Upstate NY? Personally, here in Pa., your child will get more benefits with the autism label. They qualify for TSS and Behav. therapist services outside of school....something that they review with the school district and it should be listed on those papers. It's the autism that affects your child's learning ability....more so than just DS/MR. It's the autism that causes behavioral issues in school due to speech problems, sensory issues (loud noises, fluoresces lights, etc), and learning. If she's autistic, then that's her major/primary diagnosis....whether it's for school or not. Just my two cents worth!!! Take care, Everyone. Margaret Quote
