Guest guest
Laurie, The CC center is in Farmindale, NY. How far is that from you? AS far as helping you, you really should go and visit a regional center to see for yourself. It was an eye opening experience for us and the families (references) that we contacted that had a SD could not stop talking about what a difference this dog made in their lives. Good Luck Cheryl Mic docs and service dog I took Mic to doctors today and he needed shots well by the time they looked in his ears eyes weight and heart Mic had enough he was completely melting down< I could not hold him down for shots so Dr K says to me would you like to bring him back with Dad to get his shots.UGH! I cant even handle him at the docs office alone anymore.I asked him about Mic and eating he doesnt think Mic will begin to eat,he says he will change but he doubted no matter whether its force or hunger not to get my hopes up. So I asked for a script for a service dog and hes agreeable but wants some documentation from the that the dog will benefit him.He also said if the service dogs work by command how is Mic going to interact with the dog.So any of you that have dogs and its helping could you let me know so I can show that yes Mic will benefit from the dog.Mic is great with our mutt I think a service dog would be a great deal of help and I also think Mic and the dog can be taught to work together.Whats your opinion??? It depends on Mic's needs and schedule. Ray uses his dogs mostly for agitation - works better than some meds at least for the short term. If nothing else she calms him until the meds can work. Basically the dog is his security. He feels more comfortable with his dog is with him. At one point after he was in a treatment center to restructure meds, Ray was afraid to take a bath. For a long time he wouldn't take a bath unless the dog was in the bathroom. I couldn't get him to sleep without her and she helps wake him up in the morning. Dog helps to make traveling in a car more tolerable. I also thought about how his old dog kept Ray calm during shots when I read about the difficulty you had at the doctors. It gives him a sense of responsibility to take care of her and he is very proud of her. I have a patch sewn on her cape that says " ask to pet me I'm friendly. " It is Ray who must give this permission. It increases his social interaction with others. I saw a piece on television that had service dogs for high functioning ASD kids because of the increased social interaction alone. Ray is not an escape risk but I would think a service dog would help with that. I don't remember how old Mic is so I am not sure what you would have his dog doing. Guest guest
Mic is 5 1/2 now, I know hes little but I figure it will take me awhile to get a dog.Our plain old mutt now tells me if Mic has fallen or noses me until I get up if something is wrong. This old dog laid beside Mics crib for months when he was in heart failure. She protects Mic from the cat very cute I might add.Nolan is 15 and a great old lady shes a Lab. My feelings are if Old Nolan is so useful to me for safety purposes and Mic loves her a service dog would give me alittle piece of mind. Right now unless we are in our own house Mic is on the go.The docs office was full and I chased Mic for about 35 minutes. He would not sit or stay near me and the doors were driving him crazy swinging open and shut. There were about 20 kids in there and none of those mothers were chasing their kids around just me.A dog would be very helpful so I can have some independence without Steve.Mic and I do not go to many places because of safety. The problem with Mics doc and the dog is I am breaking new ground asking for a script for a service dog.I understand he needs justification to write the script.I am breaking new ground in the school too because I have asked if the dog could go to school with Mic. I understand the dogs need to be cared for also Mic has a one on one. The school sounded actually excited to try it we just have to work on it.I think that should be enough justification right there.SAFETY Thanks for all your help, Mic is very social as long as you dont touch him.We were the center of attention again today. All those parents eyes were on us in the doctors, I was trying to smile and Mic kept yelling BABABABYE BYE thats his only word right now.Do I sound convincing do ya think? Sorry for rambling on and on. Laurie
