Guest guest
Hi Marcia, My son Ben used to get the croup and I remember rushing him to the hospital over and over and a couple of times it was a "close call" with his airway almost "closing off". One time when I went in the hospital, the doctor told me the next time he has a croup, instead of "steaming up the bathroom"....try cracking a window and putting his face beside it. Or, he said get a big heavy blanket and wrap it around him and take him "outside" in the cool night air, (here it freezes!). He was absolutely right! I NEVER took Ben to the hospital again! The cool night air helps "shrink" the membranes that are inflamed. Isn't it amazing that we just have to "get them through the night?" If we can get them throught the night, then by morning they are fine. Ben is 21 now and I don't even remember the last time he has had the croup! Take care and I hope your little Sara doesn't have anymore episodes of the croup. I will keep your mom and in my prayers and you, too. Sara (DS), age 10, had a croup episode, last night. I was hoping she had outgrown that...it has been quite a while since her last one. She came out of it after sitting in the steam of a hot shower for about 15 minutes and a nebulizer with some medication that I keep on hand. I have had to run her to the E.R., before; and, making that decision is hard, because we are 35 minutes away on icy roads, this time of year. Last night--I just tried to stay calm and try the home treatment and then if that didn't work, I would have driven her in. Guest guest
Joyce, Thank you for the information about taking our children out into the cold air, which we have, too, where we live. The fact that it shrinks the membranes that are causing the blockage makes sense. I will try that next time. (Hoping there won't be a next time, though.) It sounds llike it sure worked for Ben. It is encouraging that there is possibly an end to croup episodes as they get older It truly is about getting them through the night, because, of course, I kept Sara home from school, yesterday; however, after sleeping in, she really wanted to go to school--seemed to feel fine. It was hard to believe, as bad as she sounded in the night Take care, Marcia Mom to Sara (DS) and 10 and Lucas
Guest guest
I called 911 for the same reason last Dec, at 2 am and while the ambulance was arriving they told me to take her out into the cold and it also worked like a charm. In emergency later I felt a little defensive about maybe over reacting and calling 911 (Isabela was hyper and playing/singing etc.) but a nurse came over and said Isabela had pin marks of broken blood vessels on her cheeks that you get from not being able to breath so not to sweat it about over reacting. If she had not mentioned it I don't think I would have seem them but looking closely at her face I could see what looks like a really light, not dense, rash. Guest guest
Hi Tamara, I haven't heard from you for a long time. Thanks for the information. It's easy to second guess our decisions when it comes to our children's health. I always think it's better to overreact than underreact. We were through Vancouver the Saturday before Thanksgiving on our way to Whistler. I thought about you and told my family I had met you and your girls at our Vashon Island Get-Together the summer before last. I hope all is well.
