Guest guest
Is there anyone out there who had twins stay in the same class each year -- and how has that worked out? , I don't have twins, so I have very little experience in this area. My was in a class with a twin. His brother was in another class. The twins were Spanish speaking, so his NDA brother went into the bilingual class. His brother, with Ds, had to go into the segregated class. I always thought that was unfair. His family only spoke Spanish at home, and he had to sit in a class, where everyone was speaking a language he didn't understand! I thought he would have been much more comfortable with his brother. I know it is policy to separate twins in my district. I have always thought that twins had such a special bond, they would enjoy being together. At least in the early years. But, I'm sure the mothers who have been though this before, will give you some great advice. Good luck! Guest guest
Hi Marcia (and others who have been there done that) -- After reading your post, it made me wonder how twins deal with the separation in school. I can only imagine it would be very hard for them -- is there fear to overcome? Is there anyone out there who had twins stay in the same class each year -- and how has that worked out? I am very far away from having to deal with this, but if the last 7-mos are any kind of indicator, time truly flies when you have twins! I want so much for my boys to stay together -- but I guess I know, somewhere deep down, that may not be realistic. I have so many questions in my head about schooling -- pre-school, day care, -- but I think I am holding off getting too involved since I have quite a bit of time to research that. Right now we are still dealing with recovery form heart surgery and a new diagnosis of hypothyroidism! So I have plenty of reasearch to do -- but I still can't help but be curious about how twins handle being separated! Thanks! , mom to 7-mo old twins, Warren (DS) and Sam -----Original Message-----From: Rrietmann@... Having been the journey through Kindergarten, I will share with you the decisions we made for Sara and Gabe. They have Nov. birthdays, so when Sara was 5 in September (and not potty-trained), she began 1/2 day Kindergarten, with a full-time aide and a goal to work toward being potty-trained. (Her twin brother began the same class). She was put on a schedule and taken to the bathroom three or four times during the 1/2 day that she was at school. She was fully potty-trained a month or two after she turned six, so the school schedule really helped her with that. The next year, Sara stayed in Kindergarten, but did a full day and Gabe went on to first grade. Sara is now in second grade with the same class she did full-day kindergarten with and we are pleased with her progress. In terms of speech therapy--the four years she has been in school, she has had 1/2 hour a day 4-5 times per week with the same speech therapist. If you have any other questions, feel free to e-mail me. Guest guest
Hi and DS Group! Here is my twin-schooling story. My situation is a little different as both my sons are affected with their syndrome. Initially, the boys were together in Early Start school, then because of twin wrestling behaviors, they were separated in Preschool. In Kindergarten, they were back together (and I was their aide). Then we moved and the district we moved into has a policy of separation for multiples. Any time there is a " policy " it is usually contrary to " Individualized " education and FAPE. The boys were miserable with the separation because it had nothing to do with modifying their behavior -- they couldn't understand it and their behavior significantly changed as a result of it. After a brief (yet exhausting) fight with the school district/principal/teachers the boys were placed in the same class and they continued to share the same class until this year (5th grade) when as a team (boys included) we decided to try separate classrooms on the condition that if they suffered we could un-do it. Because the boys now had the maturation to understand the separation was not behavior related or based on a policy but actually based on what they were ready for they accepted it as a privilege rather than a punishment. It has been successful. At eleven they still share a lot of things (friends, toys, clothes, hobbies). They are very close and bring each other a lot of comfort. Hope this helps see both sides!
