Hi Laurie,

who will be 12 next month has always totally freaked out when it came to

haircuts, he would tremble scream ,cry , pee his pants etc. It was awful,

since his diagnosis of Pdd(ons) we have put a strong sensory program in his day

that includes brushing with joint compressions, jumping on tramp, power walks,

swing at school, touching different things like shaving cream, rice and beans

etc. I am happy to say that once we put this all in place his last 2 haircuts

have been tear free, he of course still keeps saying " done " , but thats

ok good luck~Vi mom to tammy 19, tania 17, and kyle 11 ds and pdd (ons)

Gosh Laurie,

If you have snipped him on accident, it might take a while for him to let you

try again. Seth is 8 years old, and it's still a battle. It takes 3 of us

to get it done. He's better than he was a year ago, but he's no where near

ready to take him out to get it done. We do only what Seth can tolerate, then

try again later. Little by little, it gets done. Not done well, but done. LOL

And washing his hair isn't a whole lot easier either. LOL

Gail :-)

Hi all, we are having a few really good days Mic is in a great mood and less

aggressive he needs a haircut badly his hair is almost to his shoulders.Mic

melts down to the point of eye crossing when we try to cut his hair.I have been

just chomping at it one strand at a time looks like he gave himself a hair cut

when I get thru.DaD has to force him he cant handle it at all its dangerous I

have cut him.I dont even attempt now.Sleeping I swear he senses those

scissors. He sees scissors and runs I dont get it.He cries like its his finger we

are

cutting off.Shave his head is impossible.I should have tried when he was

sedated. He will have a pony tail like his father if we dont do something and get

this Daddy says dont ya want a pony tail like daddy Mic UGHHHHHHHHH Thanks

hair cuts use to be tramatic around here too, it use to take 2-4of us to hold

nathan down while the barber did his work, but we kept going every month to

the same barber, who is now retired uuugh but his partner runs the joint now

and nathan is use to her and will let her do it now and nobody has to hold him

or anything. He gets a buzz or " crew cut " every month so its part of his

routine. I would find someone patient but quick with the clippers, nathan is no

dawdler you better be done quick or else his haricut will have to be finished

next

time, lol. One thing ive noticed is nathan doesnt like to see his hair falling

down coming off him, he is starting to deal with it much better lately we use

to tell him close your eyes, and no peeking, this helped big time. Most docs

wont give any sedatives for a haircut. maybe some valium low dose, or xanax

works pretty quickly, but ive never seen kids on it. I would start with social

stories, let him see dad (any brothers?) gett theirs done first and then its

his turn,be sure to remind him through dads haircut that his turn is after

daddy, and just hold him down if needed, if barber will let you tape it and let

him

watch on tv, especially tape dads or brother's so that he can see how its

suppose to be done. It may seem bad at first but sometimes i feel one just needs

to do it and get it over with. Then the BIGGIE be sure to treat him to a

favorite immediately afterwords!!! nathan hets a pop nowadays, lol, and we

always

whistle at him afterwards he has been into lookin gnice lately, lol must be a

teen thing, lol. It may seem awful for a few times but it gets better with each

visit and the nitemare will only be a memory. shawna.

Laurie,

Have you tried doing it while he's in the tub? In the past, we've had

to hold Maddie down while I cut her bangs and I've done the rest of her hair in

the tub. Lately, she lets me cut it just fine. I always have a Barney

show on and let her stim with something while I do it. AND I CHEER CHEER CHEER

like mad...just like I do when I clip her nails. She thinks Mommy is so

funny, she lets me snip again!!! It takes longer, but makes for a smoother

event.

Also, we had a haircutting shop that had tv's at every seat. Your child

could watch anything he/she wanted while getting a cut. Didn't work for

Maddie since she has more problem with being in an unfamiliar setting than

getting

her hair cut....but thought I'd mention it to you.
