Guest guest
A toilet teaching strategy I use even now is pairing an event to a toileting time. For example, when you get out of bed in the morning, you head straight for the bathroom, same thing before you go to bed. At school, it can be paired with before or after recess & lunch. Anytime we return home from an outing/school, etc., as soon as enters the house, he goes directly to the bathroom. I have tried to get him to go before we leave the house, this meets with a lot more resistance, but is sometimes very necessary if you know it's been awhile or you have a long trip ahead of you. Before any mealtime or snack it is also a necessary event in our house - you don't get fed until you've paid a visit to the bathroom! Also, having a very strong reinforcer for compliance to going to the bathroom, especially if it's self initiated, is huge! When I was working hard on consistent bowel training with , he would head directly to the bathroom from the school bus and sit, he desperately wanted to play Nintendo. The only time he got to play was if he was successful on the toilet! Hope this helps - I was nicknamed " toilet training queen " at my old job.....! Guest guest
We do something similar with . Going pee is on his list of things to do as part of his morning and night routines. Also when he gets home from school list, before computer. If he gets out of his routine, we have diffficulties. In fact a couple times, we've been eating dinner and he couldn't eat cuz he was so full of pee. We figured it out and sent him to relieve his bladder. He can come back and eat!! Also, he goes to the potty so infrequently, if I make him go in to pee when we are out somewhere (airport, seaworld, zoo)-he'll stay in there for an eternity (i assume going poop). It's always those times that we're in a hurry and i want him to rush into the men's room and pee. I'm outside waiting for 15 minutes asking the men who are leaving the restroom if he's ok in there!!!!! The brain doesn't know just go in and finish. It's well, i'm here. guess i should poop?!!!
