What do you think? Hi Carol, My first thought is why doesn't Trisha have a communication device? Is the teacher giving Trisha choices? You actually didn't give much info but my guess from experience is that the teacher is getting into a power struggle, the teacher's way or no way. The teacher needs to allow Trisha to have some control and give choices ie you can work on this paper using a crayon or stamps etc. It doesn't have to be anything major. I also am wondering if she is giving Trisha some processing time after a request, give the direction with choices and leave Trisha alone for a few minutes at that point she can give reminders of the choices. When Trisha follows directions and makes good choices there has to be lots of praise etc. Does she have a token board for rewards etc? If you feel something isn't right it isn't, follow your gut. I called the school today and found out that the teacher stopped using Trisha's picture schedule. I have no idea if that has anything to do with Trisha's behavior or not but I asked the teacher to use it all the time, not just occasionally. I honestly think you are right, I do think it is a power struggle and I have requested that someone from the autism center come and observe her in the class. Carol She isn't Typical, She's Trisha! Hi Carol, I would say not using the picture schedule consistantly would definately cause a problem. Trisha needs to know what's going on in her day just like any other student. I consider the daily schedule for our children a vital support. I would bet there are a few more changes in the classroom that you are unaware of as well. Sometimes I wonder just who is the special needs person, my daughter or the system! I think it is easier to teach her than it is to teach the professionals. Carol She isn't Typical, She's Trisha!
