Hi Laurie,

We are using the picture cards with Hannah. We have the Boardmaker program

on our computer and I'm hoping that we will evolve into computer assisted

speech output.

Hannah's fine motor skills are horrible - don't know why - anybody out

there help me with this? I remember someone here saying their kids hands were

really weak. Hannah hates coloring, anything with markers, crayons, etc. unless

it's the LeapFrog pen, we will hold that, and eat it and suck on it etc.

Anyways, sorry about that rabbit trail there, her sign language consists

of big motor signs. Things that involve arms and such but if it comes down to

crossing fingers and doing fine motor signs forget it. But she's a whiz at

matching pictures! So that's what we're doing.

Hey Laurie, heard you e-mailed my friend Maureen who has Isaac who had

Hirschbrung's. Isaac came to Hannah's birthday party today at Mcs, along

with a little guy from her class who has a seizure disorder. I invited all 7

kids from her class and only 1 came. Kind of bums me out. I am so glad the 2

that came came, but I'm kind of bummed that nobody else did. But we did have a

good time.

Zeb has terrible fine motor issues. I attribute some of that to the short,

stubby fat hands. We have tried teaching him to write for years or even color.

It's not going to happen. Zeb does use the computer for everything. He has a

voice recognition program called Kurweil and Write Outloud. I was told by an ed

consultant that our kids do not develop in increments like the books say. They

could do step one, not step two but excel in the following steps. You should

never take the old statement that they can't use something because they have

to develop the first step etc. It's just trial and error. We wasted so much

valuable time on writing issues rather than use AT. If had known then what I

know

now. Ask for a comprehensive AT evaluation for Hannah. The AT dept. is my

favorite in the school district. They have even been able to figure out changing

the background colors on the computer screen can have wonderful results for

our kids. It's worth asking. Remember, it's all in th wording. A comprehensive

evaluation is not the same as an evaluation.

Hi a,

Sorry for the acronyms. It's assistive technology.
