Welcome Kris and ,

Your son sounds similar to our Hannah (age 6) who also has a lot of oral

issues. She just got her g-tube removed last month but we have a very limited

menu, no speech. I read that you had Josh tested for apraxia. How do they do

that testing? I am thinking that we need to do something along those lines. You

have come to a great group with a lot of ladies who know a lot of stuff.

Hi Kris and . Welcome to the group. My daughter Maddie was dx'd

with autism by Dr. Capone at KKI (matter of fact we go for an appt on Tuesday).

Maddie has been seeing Dr. Capone since she was two (she's now 10)...he's a

great guy!!!! He has done studies on the dual dx in which Maddie

participated. It's my understanding that they use the label PDD when the

child does

not have all the components of autism. You have to have characteristics in

each of the three categories to be dx'd with autistic spectrum disorder.

Children with PDD still benefit from all the same therapies/treatments that

children with autism do......as we all know, it depends on your district whether

or

not you actually get any of them.

As far as the med you talked about, I don't know much about that one.

Maddie is on risperdal for behavior (we finally took the jump and while her

weight

has ballooned, we're very happy with the changes we see from the meds).

Maddie also has GERD (she's on reglan and zantac) and hypothroidism.

Again, welcome to the group. We're looking forward to hearing more about

. Feel free to ask us anything at all. You'll love this group and

learn so much from it, as we will from you!!

Welcome and Kris,

I agree with Margaret that PDD is a milder form of Autism. I don't know why

doctors are afraid of the Autism label. It is a spectrum and each individual

exhibits different manifestations. I would treat it like you would a dx of full

blown Autism. The more you feel comfortable with it the more comfortable doctors

will feel about it. Most of the testing for Autism in the early years is based

on the parents observations. There is so much more out there about Autism now

then ever before.
