Guest guest
our schoool does this too, sped, and resource st, ot etc are usually just pull out for 1:1 and then often group sessions are done in the room or they comeout in a group and work together, they also do many peer things such as a very advanced peer of same age may go over with multiplcation facts etc with someone struggling, all in all id have to say our school does a fair job, often it seems the older nathan gets the less he gets to do weve allready held him back at taft, there is no sped at middle school and our plans are to skip middle schoole all together and get a speced at the highschool, but he will be at taft grades (2-5)next year too. He loves it there and adores his teacher, she has made huge advancements with nathan, he will only listen to her, we finally just got her three years ago, after us parents kept petitioning the board, our kids werent learning anything in reg ed, and reg ed was way passed many of our kids academically and skills, nathan cant write, but he can now type very well, even fster than daddy, he is learning how to keyboard now instead of pecking. He is an electronics wiz. shawna Re: Re: Inclusion Irma > In a message dated 1/6/2004 10:28:23 PM Eastern Standard Time, > ICANFIELD@... writes: > > > > Can you imagine if school officials adopted a full-inclusion model > > of special education and mainstreamed all students with disabilities > > into regular education classrooms? It doesn't mean that the students have to go anywhere for supports, the supports come to them. Sped is not a place it's a service. Speech,pt and ot go into the general classrooms as well as the sped teachers. Each students goals are incorporated into the curriculum. It is not complicated but takes some effort in scheduling from the team. Zeb has ot in the computer room when his entire class goes for computer class for example and art. Speech can be incorporated at lunch or with language arts. It's endless depending on the school day and the specials, music, PE etc. Some kids do leave the classroom for 1-1 instruction during part of the day. It depends on the IEP. We are in the computer age and the resources available with AT are also endless. Zeb uses the Kurzweil program. All the textbooks are scanned into the computer. It can read, highlight, spell etc.The teachers can input the spelling words and highlight them, input tests, notes etc. He will use this program right through high school. There is nothing that can't be modified today with some tech savy and initiative. We have built sensory breaks into Zeb's day with other incentives. If a program is done correctly it can work. Zeb does have a full time aide to assist him with whatever is necessary. When Zeb is working in a group with his peers the aide is sent to the office to do copying or whatever is needed for the classroom. Zeb's school does have or did have a self contained class. The state mandated the district to place these students in age appropriate classrooms for some of their day. The teachers were required to include them into the general curriculum with the rest of the students. The kids are thriving and rarely go into the self contained classroom. It worked so well that students stay in the general classroom for most of the day now. The sped teacher co-teaches the class and helps to modify the curriculum. The school fought me to the death on this issue and now they must. I don't feel the teachers think I am the crazy mother anymore, with proper training they are beginning to understand and see the results. Hi Irma, Each grade has a specific curriculum to guide the teachers. Don't fall for that excuse. I request the grade curriculum each year so I can insure that Zeb is taught appropriately and follow the modifications to each subject. Guest guest
I was mainstreamed into some regular classes along with special ed classes. So some schools are already doing that. rebecca > In a message dated 1/6/2004 10:28:23 PM Eastern Standard Time, > ICANFIELD@... writes: > > > > Can you imagine if school officials adopted a full-inclusion model > > of special education and mainstreamed all students with disabilities > > into regular education classrooms?
