Guest guest
, I had my right middle lobe removed nearly three years ago. Before I had it done, I was also coughing up a lot of blood. That was one of the reasons my doctor advised the surgery. It lessened the infections considerably. Right after the surgery (when I was sort of coherent again), the surgeon said that I had had some “leakage of infection” into other areas of my lungs and to keep coughing to clear it out. Cough right after major lung surgery—yeah right, that sure felt good. Since then, I’ve developed several other damaged areas. But, all in all, I’m glad that I had it done. My surgery happened rather quickly. I saw my pulmonologist on a Friday and finally agreed to have it done, he set up an appointment with the surgeon for Monday, and I had the surgery on Tuesday of the following week. Let me know if you have questions regarding surgery. There were a lot of little things that I wish I had known such as take very loose fitting clothes to wear home because your body will be somewhat bloated… I’m glad that your trip was productive. Mayo Clinic is quite a place isn’t it? Barb
Guest guest
Hi , glad to hear the specialists at the clinic did their job well, and that you were happy with the service. One of the older chaps that I am caring for( the one I live in with 5 nights a week), has had surgery on his left lung for same reasons. He had already had part of the upper side removed, then the opposite side( same lung, lower, and most recently they took most of the centre of the lung, he almost has no lung left, it did stop the constant coughing up of blood, especially when he has to do postural drainage, ( he coughs deep and hard) he gets himself so worked up at night when I say its bed time, as he just finds he cannot bare the pain of the session. I truly have to coax him into it every night. The 2 nights I,m not there, I,m quite sure he doesn,t do it at all, as I always find him quite ill when I call in during the day, with his meals , or ring him to check he has taken his meds OK. He had that last surgery in August last year, when they decided to send him home with oxygen concerntrator. He still gets slight infections each other week, and we put it down to his not doing the right thing when I,m not there. I have brought him home on my days home, and he doesn,t get ill at all. He was told that there was an obstacle like thing in the centre of his lung thats why they did the op. But they say it was something ingested( part of another piece of tissue) that was continually getting infected and bleeding. He still coughs blood but only on the odd occassion when he has had a day or 2 of frequent coughing bouts( almost all day sometimes). Any way, apart from all that, he is able to eat better, and moves around a lot better, still cannot do much physically, as shortness of breath, triggers cough etc. He is of course not a very young man, he is 78. And has never taken good care of himself, until now, with me there. Sometimes I feel like I,m bullying him, as he really does get agitated when it comes to taking meds, and drainage etc. Always tries excuses, but I have to be firm, or he just won,t make it, ( as his doctor tells him). I am sure you will get the right care, and I am sure you have a much better attitude toward yourself, your health and body,( looking after yourself), than the old chap. He is just getting the care he should have been getting years ago. I sometimes wonder if he had had that care, would he be so unwell today. He isn,t very spendthrift, so I think he may have kept his money rather than get help, till it was that he was in ICU, dying. And I,m sure you have lots of respect for yourself. I am thrilled to hear that you are happy with the clinic, as that is half the battle too isn,t it, having trust in the people caring for you. Good luck, keep doing all things right, and I,m sure you will get the best care and good results, looking after yourself well, most often pays off well. Thinking of you, Hugs, Sandy
