Mint

Our back yard is huge, . We have lots of fruit trees and bushes, and

Wayne is trying to get the mint to spread like a carpet around them, so he

can just mow them now and then, and cut down his weeding time. It takes him

three hours to mow the back lawn, at a run. Our small garden is 30 by 40,

our big garden is 40 by 60, and the lawn is between them. Gives yo an idea

about the size of the yard. :-D

The kinds of mint we have don't attract flies, but the catmint (also called

catnip) never lasts long enough to harvest, as the cats keep it down to the

roots.

Yes, mint is very hard to be rid of once you have it. It is like trying to

get rid of snow-on-the-mountain, as it spreads by roots, and even if you dig

it out, if the least little root is left behind, it sprouts more. One way to

be rid of it is to find something more aggressive than it that will strangle

it out and take over. Take a sample to your local greenhouse and see if they

can identify it, and what might be more aggressive than it, either a

different kind of mint (peppermint seems to be the most aggressive -- there

are many varieties), or another plant altogether. If it is bothersome, you

can use chemical herbacides, but I would leave that as a last resort, as

they poison the soil for years if you intend to use that place to grow

anything edible, or you have MSC or EI.
