Guest guest
This article made me sad and angry also. It would seem that because their daughter was affected in the early stages of life, he has precluded any other possible cause , other than genetics, for autism. And that his NT daughter wants to study genetics and find the genetic cause. It would also seem that bio-med treatments for his daughter wouldn't be on his radar either. Pathetic -with someone highly intelligent with such a closed mind. maurine Subject: Washington Post article on HotezTo: EOHarm Date: Tuesday, July 1, 2008, 9:32 PM The usual propaganda, this time featuring Hotez, Scientist and Father:http://www.washingt onpost.com/ wp-dyn/content/ article/2008/ 06/27/AR20080627 03023.html
Guest guest
Here's Hotez on NPR: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=11070884 I've posted this link before for last year's " All Things Considered " . Hotez and Gardiner are on this segment, playing attack dogs against the Omnibus parents (who bite back during the call-in part of the segment-- pretty great). Well, like they said in one of the articles on him, Hotez's finances are pretty strained because of his daughter so I guess he's just trying to raise his profile to Offit-like mouthpiece status to bring in the bucks. It would have been better for the world if he'd just done a nude calendar, huh? > > The usual propaganda, this time featuring Hotez, Scientist and Father: > > http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp- dyn/content/article/2008/06/27/AR2008062703023.html >
Guest guest
When I read stories of this nature it affects me the same way. Having been very active in advocating for families for many years though I've come to the conclusion that each person is in their own place as to how they assist and support their child with ASD. I've personally not judged others for that reason because I'm not living their life 24/7. However I do think that when parents limit their horizons on how to assist their kids, they then are limiting opportunities for their children. Our son would still be self-abusive, not speaking, and unable to attend general education classes if we had not chosen the path for him we did. He too broke out and away from his ASD and chose community involvement. But it's been a full time job with overtime really to keep this going and a lot of folks just don't have the capability. Many don't have the financial means, the supports in place, nor perhaps the open minds to see beyond the disability. In meeting many folks I have asked myself the " What if? " question many times. But that is really hard to do and hard to really know what outcomes can take place. From this article however it would seem that outcomes for Mr. Hotez daughter are being determined by his thought process about her ASD. I do get sad when I read articles like this because I do not want people to pity or provide charity to individuals with ASD but to provide empathy and compassion as well as support if needed.
