Hello All,

I am considering a number of options as I work diligently to get back into the work force as an art therapist. I've been unemployed since resigning my previous position in January. I wonder if as many of you as possible might respond to help me get a sense of a reasonable salary range or hourly wage to negotiate or set.

I am an ATR-BC, LCAT with 13.5 years of experience working outpatient with adults with serious and persistent mental illness. I have specialized skills in the areas of trauma and dissociation. I provide individual art therapy and love group work. I'm looking at options that include private practice, contracted work, and agency work. Can anyone provide an appropriate salary range or hourly wage to negotiate for any/all of these settings? Over the past couple of years, I've saved emails in which a salary or wage was posted, but I don't have a good sense of what to negotiate given my level of experience and specialty skills. I was ridiculously underpaid by my previous employer.

Thanks so much for any guidance in this area.

Shari, thanks for your response. Wow. That much? Really? I about fell off my chair. I was being paid 30K/yr with benefits.

I was thinking . . . . if anyone would like to personal message me about their salary / wage experiences, I could track amounts, years of experience, and setting --no names. Then I could post as a list whatever info I gained --again, with no names. I realize it's very personal information, so I understand few might want to do that. Just a thought.

Hi,

FYI my private practice rates are $95 a session (45 minutes); although I do work with a sliding scale when financially necessary for some clients. Most get reimbursed 50-60% by their insurance companies.

Thank you for your information and quick response; yours is the second since my post. I was thinking I'd be lucky if 10 people responded. Regardless of the number, I will post the info -without names.

Best,

I work outside of NYS - in the greater Boston area, and I make between $12 to $28 an hour, working part-time, with no benefits (thank goodness for Mass Health!).

I've been in the field for almost 15 yrs, am not eligible for LMHC (due to specific requirements that Massachusetts have, that my graduate program did not incorporate), but have certifications in Special Education and Art Education. I've worked in schools, afterschool programs and a temp agency that places counselors and teachers.

It all depends on where you live/work & the placement you are at as well.

Dear NYCCAT group:

I know Gretch and I have been communicating through email separate from the

NYCCAT group. I just want to add to this fascinating and helpful discussion for

the whole group. Gretch, thank you for bringing it up.

Clearly, there is a wide range out there, especially because of cost of living

differences. I lived in NYC for 12 years and recently moved to the suburbs of

Philadelphia, so I am continuing to learn about cost of living issues.

However, I want to bring up that a key factor in deciding what ask I for in

payment for service is my feelings of possible resentment. I never want to go

to work or see a client if I might be resentful of lack of pay later on down the

line. There are some things that I'll do for free or almost nothing (one time

only and in order to eventually obtain paying clients) just because I love it

and want the experience, but there are some clients or jobs where I know that I

will have to get paid a good sum of money to make it worth my while (like

driving 45 minutes each way to provide in-home services). That's how I go about

deciding.

I have also gleaned some insight from a few great books I've read about building

psychotherapy practices. I liked this way of calculating how much to charge:

Start with how much you want to make annually ($50,000) and divide that by 44

weeks (52 weeks/year minus vacation/sick if you're paid per diem) = $1,136/week,

then work on how many hours per week you wish to work (40 hours/week would be

$1,136/40 = $28/hour). Clearly, if you want to work less hours per week or

less/more weeks per year, you would adjust and calculate.

Again, a brilliant discussion - I am learning a lot! I hope this helps.

Hi everyone- I have been working for the past 2 years for as an a hospice art therapist , as a consultant, getting paid $35.00 per hour. My new supervisor, who is a licensed Music therapist, asked meto get the "sourcebook" from AATA- something the AMTA provides for their members- that lists pay scales according to job and location. We both understand my fee is low, but in order for him to recommend to our agency's adjustment board a pay adjustment for me, I must provide him with data representing the average pay scale for cat consultants. I contacted AATA and all I got was a 2009 report of the average pay scale for salaried CATS compared to other clinical professions.... yes and the salaries are low-( 30-40) and no

mention of hourly rates for consultants in that report. I saw recently a thread from Gretchen, who is relocating to NY about cost of living and pay scale and saw someone respond to Gretchen that "$50.00" per hour is the going rate. This is my understanding too- but is there an actual report somewhere I could reference to? Please help me out-" I'm dying" to get a raise...see what I'm reduced to-bad hospice humor :) nne Gunther, LCAT347- 628-9279 www.listeningartnewyork.commarianne@... listeningart@... Hi nne,

I've been collecting salary and wage info from anyone who's willing to disclose theirs. Some folks have been sending their information through my email address for more privacy. I am thinking for compiling this Sunday whatever's been submitted by then and then posting the info without names. I will add your info. Thank you for providing the reference to AMTA as a source of info. Are there any MT's out there who have that info and are willing to add it here?

Just to clarify, I'm not moving. I just used NYC as an area to compare cost of living with that of my present locale.

nne, hospice is one of the places I may approach re potential employment opportunity. If you have time to answer some questions by phone or email, I'd love to hear about your experience. Not a problem if you don't have time or would rather not. Thanks,

Hi,

The 2009 AMTA Member Sourcebook has salary information listed in so many different manners (by region, by years in the profession, by work setting, by age range served, etc.), it's hard to know what to share. I think the following is probably most relevant to this current thread. BTW, the information in the Sourcebook is obtained through annual survey of the AMTA membership and represents simple frequency counts, ranges, and averages as reported by those members who chose to participate in the survey.

Self-Employment Rates (national average)

Group session rates: $58.59

Individual session rates: $62.32

Assessment rates: $83.46

Salary by region - for Mid-Atlantic Region (which covers Delaware, land, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, DC):

Number of respondents: 278

Average salary: $49,511

Salary range: $22,000 - $135,000 (this includes university faculty and administrative positions)

Average salary in NYS: $52,472

9-26-10

Hello all,

I compiled all the salary and wage information I received since 9-14-10; Thanks to all who participated. I received information from 32 respondents that resulted in 9 pages of comments. I reduced the 9-pages to 6 by condensing and editing some comments. I put the responses in order of years of experience; those that did not include that info were put near the end. I also added information that I collected previously over the past few years about positions that were posted with salary info included, as well as info I collected from the American Medical Association site:

http://www.ama-assn.org/ama/pub/education-careers/careers-health-care/health-care-income.shtml

I'm attaching this info as a word document. If that doesn't work for some reason, I'll post again with the info included here.

Again, thank you all so much for your support and assistance.
