Guest guest
You said it Mark!; " some people just don't use their headss " . No one should go NO carbs, just like low carbs doesn't mean to increase calores with other foods. Re: Hoods' Low-Carb Milk I heard on the news yesterday, that lots of folks are having to go to the hospital cause they aren't eating enough carbs per day. they were really down on the Atkins diet. they were saying how bad it is to cut out carbs and you shouldn't be listening to all the non sense about cutting carbs to loose weight. sounds to me, like maybe these people had cut out all there carbs per day and not eating any at all. this would for sure probably make you sick if you didn't eat any carbs a day at all. some folks just don't use there heads and a good way of eating and staying healthy, gets a bad rap. Atkins never said in his book to cut out all carbs. but his diet is sure getting kicked around here lately for putting people in the hospital. some times I think the fast food industry is the ones be hind all the bad talk about low carbs. they will loose a lot of money if folks believe in eating less carbs to get healthy. just my opinion for what ever it is worth. Hoods' Low-Carb Milk > > > Has anyone tried the new low-carb milk from Hoods? Well, I did this past week but was very disappointed in it. It may be low in carbs but it's also low in taste, kind of bitter but the milk is not spoiled, just doesn't taste right. Guest guest
I absolutely agree! Complete lack of common sense seems to be a National disorder these days. Way back in the early 70s I worked for Great Western Sugar Company in Denver, Colorado. Somewhere long about then the Cyclamates came out as a sugar substitute. The taste was every bit as good as sugar and there were no after effects such as some folks have had with Aspartame. Well, the sugar companies realized that this was a real problem so they conjured up some research which said that consumption of the Cyclamates would cause cancer and the FDA then banned the product. Well, what the research really said is that if you consumed enough pop which was made with Cyclamates you might develop cancer. That was a true statement. What was not said is that it would have taken about 800 cans of pop per day to cause this to happen. Mark, what you said about fast food stressing the bad parts of the Atkins diet may be more true than you realize. Lots of fast food places are jumping on the low carb wagon these days. Arby's has their low carb Wraps and they are pretty good. Only about 15 carbs per wrap and that is not all bad. I highly suspect that the number is probably as bogus as a three dollar bill though. Common sense in all things is a good rule to follow. Not only low carbs but also watch those calories as well..... The Consumer Reports article stressed that the body wants to know that it has a food source or it will start hoarding everything and converting it into fat for a " Rainy Day " . A few carbs spread over the day will convince the body that it does, in fact, have a food source and that it is not necessary to hoard food will cause the body to grab some of the fat it has stored and use it for energy. This is a good thing. It is also necessary to consume a goodly amount of - guess what - water during the day so the liver can make the fat conversion back to energy. Coffee will cause one to pee and this is NOT what one wants the body to do with the water right off. One wants the body to use the liquid for fat conversion and then get rid of it. Hmm, wonder if beer has the same effect? Once upon a time way back when I was an Alcoholic I made the statement that I might as well just order a beer and take it to the men's room and pour it down the drain because I was tired of being the middle man. Take care and talk to you later. The Ancient One... Guest guest
, Tell you what I am going to do for you my friend. I am going to make some home made ice cream and I am going to bring it to your house on one of those awful hot days and I'll bet you can't resist.... Of course it will be low carb! What else would you expect? When you deduct the fiber and alcohol sugar from the total carbs it will surly look exactly like the other low carb products... Betcha! Cy, the Ornery Ancient One... Guest guest
I bet the ice cream will be great made with Splenda! Of course, you might add extra fat to make it really good! Guest guest
Bill, Take a good look at the ingredients on the low carb and, for that matter, low fat products. They ain't at all what they seem. There is such a miasma surrounding the term " Low Carb " that it becomes nearly useless. As I had mentioned to some time ago, we saw a chocolate cake mix which claimed only 9 net carbs per serving. When reading the content list on the box we noticed that the total carb count per serving was 25, which is nowhere near a net of 9. After subtracting the fiber amount and then the alcohol sugar they determined a net of 9. Very misleading indeed. Some of the low carb are really high in the fat content and some of the low fat are really loaded with sodium. A lot of these products are not going to be around two years from now because they are a sham. As the old saying goes, " Let the buyer beware. We need some carbs, just as we need some protein, some fat, etc., but it's being realistic about it. It's too easy to get so preoccupied with cutting out carbs that you don't wind up enjoying anything you eat or drink at all, and what good is that? Hey, I enjoy an occasional peach cobbler, but I don't eat 'em every day, and I eat it early enough in the day that I can walk to burn up some of those carbs. I know ultimately I'm going to pay for what I eat so I keep that in mind and enjoy my food, I just don't eat foolishly beyond my limits though. Just like you don't live beyond your monetary means, I live according to what I can reasonably afford to " pay for. " I'm so mad at the food industry for doing overkill on this low-carb stuff. Half the things that are out there most surely will be gone in a couple of years because people will burn out on it trying to convert to it overnight or living on it in excess, or thinking that this is the panacea to all their medical problems. Therein, they will be in for some disappointment because like so many things, a lot of the " low carb " things are probably wind up not being as low-carb as first thought, and to the other extreme, people will go so low-carb that they will cause themselves damage to the heart or other organs. A little common sense here goes a low way, but I'm afraid in all the low-carb frenzy that's all the rage, good ol' common sense has gone the way of the hair I used to have......
