I don't think I'm self-aware enough (especially of my body)

to know whether I ever copy other people's movements. But

I know I learned to " do talking " by imitating my sisters.

Sometimes I suddenly hear their voices (one or the other of

them) coming out of my mouth when I'm talkng to someone

else, and it's an eerie feeling. But very helpful. Who knows

what I'd sound like (probably " autistic " ) if I hadn't been

able to model my voice on theirs. Not that sounding autistic

is bad, obviously (and would be helpful in terms of self-

understanding, certainly); but given that I was born in

1950, l'm probably lucky that I was able to grow up sounding

as " normal " as I did (and do) even in my scripted speech with

other people.

I do that a lot, and I'm beginning to avoid people again so I don't pick up

their idiosyncrasies. I used to like to watch " normal " people and try to act

like them, but now I have integrated the actions and phrases of a person

that I now think is an idiot, and I can't get rid of it.

In my house, normal is only a setting on the dryer.

Hi,

I dont' know about copying movements myself, but I copy speech

patterns and accents and it bothers me. It's not all the time, but it

feels like I am " channeling " the person. I sort of did this

deliberately when I " became " my best friend in junior high. she was

somewhat popular and liked me, and I felt like if I acted like her I

would be cool. Didn't work.

I was automatically imitating my lady boss most recently, it's a

little creepy.

No, that is one of the problems I have, no close friends or significant

other. I have asked a couple people who just say I'm " too shy " .
