When Olivia was tested, they only looked at 20 of her cells. In the beginning I

really wanted to know the percentage, because I thought if she had a low

percentage then she wouldn't be so different. Since then, I have read a lot of

parents talk about percentage, " oh my kid is only 6% downs or 10% downs " , etc.

When the test came back I asked about percentage and the Chief of the Genetics

Dept. told me there was no way to know exactly, because there are different cell

lines and to know precisely they'd have to test each line. Not only that but 20

cells is not representative of the entire line and to be more accurate you'd

need to test a larger sample (500+).

So I let it go and asked myself, in the grand scheme of things does it really

matter? Does the kid with 6% downs have a better life than the one with 50%

downs? Are they loved more? Supported better? Given greater opportunities? Each

of our kids is so unique and to me at least, it doesn't matter the percentage.

All the numbers make it feel like a competition, and I don't want to put that on

Olivia. I love her unconditionally and irregardless of how many of her cells are

affected.

Just how I feel. Hope I didn't offend anyone.
