Guest guest
: I'm not sure what you can attribute to the disease, and what you can attribute to the treatment. I've also experienced pain in the calves, feet, ankles, etc. Part of the problem is that IgAN can cause some swelling in the lower extremeties anyhow. That swelling can cause you to tire easily, and have trouble walking. I don't even try to keep up with my coworkers when they start fast- walking anymore. I just tell them I'll catch up with them when we all get to where we are going. As for the Prednisone, the biggest things that I notice is a change in taste (may be the other drugs too), and the fact that I get very hungry very fast (usually curable via a light snack). I found that I started feeling really good about 3 weeks after diagnosis. But then I got a pretty bad cold also (still have it now), and I'm feeling kind of lousy. I hope to get back to feeling great once the cold season passes. Walt
Guest guest
Dear I am not on medication at all, and I do get slightly swollen ankles occasionally but his usually coincides with a cold or some other sort of virus. It is very understandable that you worry about your health, particularly in early diagnosis days, we have no doubt all been through this, I know I did. So I cant tell if you if your symptoms relate to the Pred, but if you are worried, then do consult your medics, after all that it what they are there for, don't feel guilty about going along to be checked. Good luck, and I hope you feel better soon. Best wishes Prednisone Symptoms? Today (not a Pred day), one of my calves has been very sensitive when I walk. In addition to that, my ankles are sore. Does anyone else have this trouble? I'm beginning to think I have a blood clot or some vascular problem. I had a veinous leg doppler before my biopsy. It was fine, but who knows now after week 3 of the meds. It's almost like a cramp, so maybe I'm dehydrated. Also, I have a the beginning of a sore throat. Should this warrant a call to my doctor or should I just take something? I read somewhere that if you had Prednisone side effects at least you knew it was working. I'm so confused right now. Any thoughts would be appreciated. You know before the IGa, I would have just let it go, now everything is like it's going to be a disease. It's going to be a continuation of the IGa. You'll never be healthy again. Those are the thoughts that constantly run through my head. But hey, I'm a new diagnosis. I'm sure this will subside sooner or later. What else can the pred do? Maybe psychosis(sp?)is next!
Guest guest
Thanks Walter, Thanks . I feel much better this morning, but I do have a slight cold. I have to leave my house for my mom's because one of the people I live with apparently has a virus or the flu. I don't know what this all means, but I haven't seen blood in my urine for about 12 hours. I swear this coincides with me drinking alot of Diet Coke! Cross your fingers! Guest guest
Walter, I forgot to respond to the hunger issue. I am with you on that one. When it's time to eat, it's time to eat. I can no longer wait 30 minutes at a restaurant to be seated. If I wait too long to eat, I will eat the entire house. But the good thing is, I have been watching the kinds of things I eat, especially the sugar, and I haven't gained any weight. This may be the best diet for me yet. The one where fear is the motivating factor!
Guest guest
It's not the Coke, but it could be the fluids. IgAN is one kidney condition where drinking a lot of fluids is good (unless something specific about one's condition precludes that). I don't think colas would be my first choice though. Guest guest
Well your lucky on that point . When people get closer to ESRD, they tend not to want to eat much. Guest guest
I concur totally with Pierre. I have to tell you my Nephrologist banned all fizzy drinks from my day to day diet, cola being one of the worse ones to be drinking (heard the old tale, put a piece of steak in a bowl of coke for 24 hours, and see what happens to it - it turns green!!!). Water, water and more water was the order of the day.....and not sparkling water. As for the virus your roommate has, sounds as if it is too late to prevent your catching it now, hope you feel better soon. Best wishes Re: Re: Prednisone Symptoms? Guest guest
Change in taste? ACE inhibitors can do that. I experienced it myself. Like a dulling of taste, plus a bit of a metallic taste. Guest guest
It's Diet Coke. Caffiene-free at that.
Guest guest
I agree with Pierre. I don't think cola's are that good for you. Following the advice of my nutritionist, I've been going with: Apple Juice Cranberry/Apple Juice Cranberry/Raspberry/Strawberry Juice. Poland Spring Water Sparkling Water IBC Root Beer Almost all of these have less caffiene than colas. Walt
Guest guest
I was on 80mg a day -- 4 20mg pills. I was taking them two in the morning, two at night. Thursday, he switched me to 3 20 mg pills per day. I still take the two in the am, and one at night. In a couple of weeks, I'm switching to 1.5 at each time. Next month, I will go down to 2, and then taper to every other day after that. Looks like I will be off of the Prednisone in a few months. Guest guest
I thought it was the ACE Inhibitor. Metallic taste is exactly the way to describe it. Walt > Change in taste? Guest guest
What about all of the sugar in those juices? That scares me more than anything. When you are on prednisone, you can become diabetic. Drinking juices, even with natural sugar, isn't going to help. -- In iga-nephropathyegroups, " Walter Crosby " <wcrosby@a...> wrote: > I agree with Pierre. Guest guest
I'm not having that much trouble with glucose levels. All-in-all, water is probably just the best thing...
Guest guest
It's not the caffeine (although someone who has bad hypertension that is particularly sensitive to caffeine might want to avoid because of that), it's that colas are high in phosphorus. Phosphorus isn't really a big problem in itself unless a person is pretty close to needing dialysis or is already on it, but some think colas should be used in moderation anyway, even in mild chronic kidney disease. Plus, it's not very healthy to begin with. On the scale of things I would give up because there's even a chance it would help my kidneys, cola would be right up there. A beer is much healthier, especially your American beer, which tastes like water anyway Pierre Re: Prednisone Symptoms? > It's Diet Coke. Guest guest
Yes, but I try to only drink Canadian beer! I've been avoiding alchohol (except for a glass of wine here and there) since I've been on the medications. Are you saying that a beer here once in a while would be fine? Guest guest
You know what, I'm going to be the guinea pig. If my IGaN develops more rapidly than others, then it's the diet cola. I also eat out alot and may occassionally take to a Taco Bell burrito. Although, I can't afford the gas right now! I'll let you know. > It's not the caffeine (although someone who has bad hypertension that is > particularly sensitive to caffeine might want to avoid because of that), > it's that colas are high in phosphorus. Guest guest
A little bit late in the conversation, sorry of that. I'm not an expert about prednisone but I have a great experience (10 months and great dosis). As far as I can rememnber, here are all the effects I can attribute to prednisone : fatigue (i've stopped my treatment and now I'm OK), always being hungry, trembling of hands (very hard to work with this), slight colds becoming bronchitis (effect due to the lose of defense, be very carefull with slight colds), problems to sleep (even if i was exhausted). Sure I'm forgoting lots of things, but now I can compair with and without prednisone because my treatment has stopped. As for the metal taste, I never took ACE inhibitors, but I experimented this bad taste, due to prednisone, when they was injecting me the high dosis of 3g of prednisone once in 2 months (terrific experience:) As for sugar, my doctor told me about being carefull because of the diabete. He told me : no more " direct " sugar, like every thing related to sodas, or sugar in coffee, cakes etc. Fruit sugar, I was allowed to eat as much as I wanted. If you have questions, please ask, if my experience in such a thing can help you. Sophie
Guest guest
I think you have somewhat overreacted here. I only responded to the questions in your message. My comment on your roommate was you said you had a slight cold coming on, and I meant it looked as if it was too late by you going to your mothers to escape his virus or whatever. The 'coke' whether it be diet or not, was my personal experience with my Nephrologist. I was not trying to influence you one way or the other. Please try to remember that this is a group of fellow sufferers willing to share experiences and information pertinent to their particular circumstance.....whether or not you choose to act upon any of the information is entirely up to you. At the end of the day you choose which road you wish to follow. Guest guest
Then I'm sure you wouldn't like it Ginger. Better stay away from that British and European stuff too. Seriously though, my previous nephrologist was an older man, and he firmly believed that one good beer a day was good for the kidneys. Now, my current one is a younger woman, and I figure she must feel the same way about beer as you do, because she never mentioned a thing about it. So, I'm still following my previous neph's prescription Of course, that's just one a day, not a six-pack, or a case of 24 like we have in Canada. He runs a non-profit corporation that operates a number of dialysis centres now, so I never run into him, and that's why I don't see him anymore. Guest guest
That's interesting about beer. I strongly hinted to 's neph to tell him how bad beer is (being 16, that's the cool thing to do). He really didn't say much other than that when he was 16 he remembers having a beer or two, and that won't hurt-for that was a license to kill!
