Guest guest Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 I have been told that ADVAIR is not a good idea as it contains steroids and steroids can lead to infections. Any thoughts on this? Marsha/NYC Quote
Guest guest Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Hello there Tolly! And Sandy from Australia! Always interested in hearing from others with similar conditons! My oxygen level was only 68% last week when I went to the hospital after work. I felt breathless all day and my boss was not amused he continued only to be interested in getting his work done! Stressful job. Hey I've been told I now qualify for disability, even a disabled parking plate ... at least I took the offer up on the later! I can't stop working right now for financial reasons. Have to grin and bear it. I'm 59 and [up to now] lead a very hectic lifestyle so this disease is really putting a damper on things. I now have a nebulizer along with all the usual and sundry meds and gadgets we have to have. I am also currently on Avelox antibiotic which seemed to help get rid of the nasty globs of mucus but I am left with an unproductive cough. My sinuses are blocked, not sure if it is a cold [seems like it] or that my infection moved " north " . Tolly, are you in England? I was born in London ... yeah during the smoggy London days. I also had very bad whooping cough as an infant and was hospitalized for measles as a toddler. Probably began my journey to bronchiectasis, what do you think? Thanks for the information on carrying oxygen on airlines. I will be travelling lots next year ... haven't been put on oxygen yet am waiting for my pulmonary doc to contact me. Sandy, I read your long note with much interest, thanks! Boy you have been through a lot with this haven't you? I am the same age too but this, thank God, just began the last year for me. I have never been diagnosed with asthma by the way although respiratory illness do run rampant in my family, even my daughter has asthma! Later, Janet > > I am new to this group but have been diagnosed about seven years ago. > I am now 81. Guest guest Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 That's interesting. Both my doctors recommend that I use Advair. Yes I know it is like albuteral with steroid combined but I don't think my doctors would put me on something that would cause infections! Especially as they are trying to combat my flareups! The steroid delivery goes directly to the lungs which is obviously much safer than popping steroid pills that affects the body in its entirety. My daughter is asthmatic and uses Advair too and has never ever had any problems, especially with infections. In fact she is at a place now where she feels that her asthma is well controlled for the first time in her 22 year old life. Where on earth did you get that information? Guest guest Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Janet, A pulmonary specialist told me not to use it. He is well known and much respected. Quote
Guest guest Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 No, we live in Saint Louis, Missouri. I was doing research in England for my PhD dissertation when I got ill. I was a late bloomer, getting my degree at age 74. Tolly Quote
Guest guest Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 My doctor is opposed to prolonged use of prednisone (a steroid) because it lowers your immune system. However inhaled steroids, such as Advair which is flovent and serevent, are in his opinion a necessary part of Bronc treatment. Guest guest Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 have been told that ADVAIR is not a good idea as it contains steroids and steroids can lead to infections. Advair is an inhaled steroid. I've never heard that steroids lead to infections. Who told you that Marsha? Advair helps open the bronchai and airways..it helps to minimize the inflammation so we can breathe better. Because it's an inhaled steroid you need to rinse THORGOUGHLY and gargle well..because it can lead to thrush otherwise. It's happened to me It's a price we pay for using another med to help us breathe. We just do what we gotta and move on..enough said Sandie Never Look Down on SomeoneUnless You're Gonna Help Them Up Quote
Guest guest Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Yes, Tolly, my pulmonology doctor says exactly the same thing! Inhaled steroids definitely are a necessary part of Bronc treatment! Guest guest Posted October 24, 2006 Report Posted October 24, 2006 Good for you! Congratulations! There's hope for me yet. At age 59 I am just three credits shy of getting two associate degrees, one in science and another in arts. Took classes for fun as a home-maker. But I did get a paralegal " degree " during that time too which helped me get decent jobs in law offices! I am definitely going to get that last class in, then I can strive for my Bachelors! Both my kids graduated four years of college from Cal-Berkeley UC great education. Son works at Oracle and daughter is applying now to medical school. Have to work on ME next [hubby has a bachelors and a masters]. I never went to college in England, just had a lowly secondary education! Most of my education was garnered in the good ole USA!! Sorry, I got off track... Janet > > No, we live in Saint Louis, Missouri. I was doing research in England > for my PhD dissertation when I got ill. Guest guest Posted October 25, 2006 Report Posted October 25, 2006 Hi Tolly, My name is Jan and I also live in St. Louis (Fenton area). I'm sorry you have bronch but nice to know there are others in this group who are from St. Louis. Through the years the doctors gave me the impression I was the only one when I would ask if I could get in contact with other bronch sufferers. I was diagnosed in 1992 and I'm 56 years old now. I think it is great you are continuing your education at such a "young" age. Good luck! Jan in St. Louisanatolebrowde wrote: No, we live in Saint Louis, Missouri. Guest guest Posted October 25, 2006 Report Posted October 25, 2006 Hi Marsha, Did a medical doctor tell you that Advair was unhelpful? According to my doctor, Advair is actually a very good medication especially for those who have an asthmatic component. It has been helpful in treating my asthma. In turn with my asthma under better control, this helps my bronchiectasis. Guest guest Posted October 25, 2006 Report Posted October 25, 2006 Hi , Yes, that is why reading all my group friends' responses leaves me sort of conflicted. Quote
