My Dr. perscribed Fosamax for me to take for bone density, I take it once a week...but there is some new stuf out called BONIVA, that you take once a month. Take your time and discuss your concrns this with the Rheumatologist. We prsy that all goes well with the Dr. visit, today.

I've only been on prednisone since the beginning of June but my doctor put me on Boniva to prevent bone loss at the same time we started the prednisone. I'm also on Calcitriol (a vitamin D supplement) and he told me to take Os-Cal an OTC calcium supplement. I have not had a bone scan but probably will sometime in the next few months. Given my age (47) and the fact that I've started menopause, it's time for me to have a bone scan anyway.

The diabetes issue with the prednisone has been minor for me. I do test my blood sugar 3 times a day and give myself insulin if my blood sugar is higher than the guidelines given to me by my doctor. In the beginning I was having to give myself insulin once a day or so. Now as I've learned how to control it better with my diet and exercise I only have to use the insulin once or twice a week. I do know that some have a bigger issue with blood sugar and prednisone than I do but overall I've been relatively fortunate.

Hi Anne, I have osteoporosis caused by steroids, but mine was caused by taking injections for a broken back over a period of 20ys. Most people (and everyone is different) have to be on steroids for long periods of time before this kind of side effect shows up. I am not on meds for this(can't take) I take 2500mg calcium daily to combat the osteo. I have had no experience with diabeties with steroids. I do know some on the board have had problems with their sugar levels. Sorry I should have made that clearer. Previous to being on the prednisone I've never had any issues with blood sugar. The issues now are 100% prednisone induced.

One of the reasons I was not put on prednisone is because I am diabetic and have had trouble controlling it. If you are diabetic you need to monitor your sugar levels closely. It can be a nuisance but it can be very beneficial.

There is steroid-induced Diabetes. My mother had that. She was on prednisone

for years for RA.

I do not have osteo but I do check my gluclose regularly for

prednisone induced diabetes.

the only thing i have been given for bone density loss is extra

calcium outside of my daily vitamins. there really isn't all that

much they can do to prevent the bone loss from what i understand...i

may be wrong about that but it's what i was told....

I am a long time Prednisone user and yes, I have osteoporosis. It showed up on a density test. I have never had any symptoms such as pain. I did, however, break three ribs from coughing. I am on Fosomax.
