The cauda equina, also known as " the horse's tail " because of its appearance, is a large number of nerve roots which originate at the base of the spinal cord which is the 'Conus medullaris'. I am 2 1/2 years past surgery for detethering. Many of the symptoms and problems that I was having post-surgery have settled down now. It took about 2 years to get my medications right - to find a " cocktail " that would suit me. Please don't despair if things seem uncontrollable right now. There is a good chance that many will settle down, the farther you get past your surgery. For example, I was having some upper back pains that have gone away since having ultra-sound treatments on it. Maybe you could try asking your family doctor to refer you to a rehabilitation and physical medicine doctor. Also known as a physiatrist, this specialist would be able to help you with your various issues and refer you to other specialists. Well, that is how it happened for me anyway! Take care, V.
