Guest guest Posted September 12, 2006 Report Posted September 12, 2006 , I am soooo happy for you, I started crying. Please dear Lord God in heaven, don't let her have this monster. I pray it is something simple, something that can be controlled with meds. My prayers are with you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Vicky81856 IPH/PF 4/06 ••••••••••••• Original Message ••••••••••••• i saw a new pulmonologist today. after reviewing all of my xray, cat scan, biopsy, and pft reports....he is not convinced that i have PF. he says even in the pathology report it states "may suggest" also, the eosinophilic granuloma that i was lead to believe caused the PF, shows to have granules present but not yet turned into full blown granuloma. this can be controlled and kept from progressing with the "proper" medications.i had a new series of blood work, xrays and pft's done today. tomorrow i will be having a new cat scan. also i went to the hospital that originally did my biopsy and picked up my slides and returned them to the new pulm to personally review.he could not get over the amount of prednisone and actimmune that i have been on for almost the passed year when a definite diagnosis could not be "confirmed".to me, this is possibly good news...but also kind of scary because if it is not PF then they still have yet to determine what is wrong.....kind of makes you wonder if any of these dr's know their asses from their elbows.however we will not know anything more than we know right now until late next week, early the following week. more hurry up and wait.now i am off to take my daughter to softball practice and then to dance lessons....a mother's work is never done. :)love to you all and god bless!jaime Quote
Guest guest Posted September 12, 2006 Report Posted September 12, 2006 , I know you are anxious to have a definite diagnosis. A few here on the board have found they did NOT have pf. Makes me wonder if my own diagnosis is correct! I see my pulmonologist next month and I will ask him how he "knows" this to be a fact. I'm scared to have a lung bio and I guess that will tell for sure.....right? Are they as bad as I think??? I don't even know what all the big words mean, , but I'll catch up as you know more. Guest guest Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 Hi You, I'm with you. biopsy not for me. way tooo dangerous. The lavage --they will numb your throat then you go nite nite for a few..They put a tube down your throat flush and check the fluid and check it for what ever they want to find out, They remove a few very small samples and HOPEFULY they find out the reason for your fibrosis...Well the treatment is the same. I do know after all the reading There is nothing to stop this monster. Some are on medications for different things but nothing really helps IPF. Just ask your Dr. how your treatment will change with biopsy. Also check with your Ins. Co. about an Inogen Mine will give me a loaner for vacations.. Check it out. I'm so excited for you. Guest guest Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 Sher, I have found that the worst part of dealing with Apria is the receptionist. There is always a different person answering the phone and I have a hard time getting messages delivered. I asked for the e-mail address of the manager and that is who I contact for travel arrangements. I ask that he e-mail me back. That way I have a record of what I asked and his reply. I began this because I had a voice problem and it has worked so much better. He 'gets er done', as you like to say. Joyce PF 1997> > , I know you are anxious to have a definite diagnosis. Guest guest Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 The only problem with just going with the lavage is it only shows cells that can be washed out which will show if you have an infection, pneumonia, etc. It will not show disease process within the lung tissue such as scarring or fibrosing or tumors, nodules etc. In other words if it is an infection the lavage will show it. But for people like me who have the lavage and it shows nothing then the biopsy is the only way to determine for sure whether it is Pulmonary Fibrosis or a more treatable lung disease. So it does have its good uses as well. I showed nothing on the lavage but since the HRCat Scan showed significant changes in the lung, they need the biopsy to find out what exactly is causing these changes in the lung. It showed Lymphocytic changes, like small holes all over the lung. With sections of lung tissue to look at microscopically, they can determine whether their is a combination of diseases going on or one particular disease causing my lung problems like RA or Lupus. Guest guest Posted September 13, 2006 Report Posted September 13, 2006 had an open biopsy in Jan. he stayed in the hospital overnight, came home with limited restrictions, had some discomfort, but never had a need for pain medication. His diagnosis is idiopathic interstial pneumonia. His pulmonologist has him on colchicine, his pft showed improvement 4 months later. He has been doing more coughing as of late with clear mucous. He also takes NAC and Clear Lung and pulmicort. His finger clubbing started about 8years ago, he continues to walk faithfully several times a day, and to do his breathing exercises. He would not hesitate to have an open lung biopsy again. I believe there are several surgeries to obtain the biopsy, he had three small incisions, had a drainage tube for 24 hours, after that was removed ,we left the hospital. He was out walking the neigborhood the next day. > > Sher, everything I have read states that you DO NOT need a open lung biopsy unless they have ruled OUT every other cause. Guest guest Posted September 14, 2006 Report Posted September 14, 2006 Carolyn, This is my understanding of the value of the biopsy also. I had an open lung biopsy when I was hospitalized in June. I was already in the hospital and sick as a dog so it just seems like it was part of the process to me. I'll be honest, I had a rough go of it but that was partly due to how sick I was at the time had a bad reaction to them trying to use the thoroscope and the fact that I am apparently "difficult" to intubate. I ended up on a ventilator for two days which was unpleasant to say the least. Even given that, I'd still do it again in order to have the definitive diagnosis. One good thing about having the biopsy done, is once it's done you've got the slides (as mentioned) and the slides can be sent anywhere you want to be examined for second, third, fourth opinions without you having to undergo an additional procedure or test. Mine have been examined at my local hospital, Columbia Presbyterian in NY and Duke in NC. I feel confident (unfortunately) in my diagnosis because all the pathologists at these three hospitals agree on what the slides show. Beth IPF 06/06Draw close. Hold hands. Life is short.
