Guest guest
Andy, I am a little impaired technologically, I had one...and it said things aloud like I95 south. Weird but south makes no sense. I memorize stuff like how many holes in the sign post on the corner or that the crack in the road forms a cross pattern before I go right by the pail with the crack that has the grout stain. But roads do not really have giant white words written ON them like in maps. Maps are weird too. I don't get south, west, north, etc. I mean there's true direction, then there's other direction. ALL confusing. That machine that's handheld, it confused me which is not hard to do. Thanks for the suggestion. In some places " I95 south " is actually pointing west (like in most of Connecticut). >I memorize stuff like how many holes in the sign post on the corner or >that the crack in the road forms a cross pattern before I go right by the >pail with the crack that has the grout stain. > > That works as long as nobody fixes the sign or the road or moves the pail. >But roads do not really have giant white words written ON them like in >maps. > There are signs along them to tell you what roads they are. What model did you try? What did you tell it to do? I am very interested in the particular difficulties you and other autistics have with these devices. The technology would seem to have great potential, but we need to make it easier to use and less confusing. We have the expertise, right on this list, to do this. It would likely outsell the current ones, since NTs would find it easier to use also. Demand is likely to be enormous, because the new cellphones come with GPS capbabilty. Similar to how it is here. When I go north to Phoenix, I take I-10 west. It takes me a second to remember whether north is " west " or " east. " I tend to think of Phoenix as being north of here, but it's really northwest.
Guest guest
As long as you can get to where you need to get to, it's probably OK. In the town where I grew up, there was a supposed " north-south " street called Water St. which actually followed the river that ran through town and became an east-west street, though it was still called " North Water St. " in that part of town. When I was learning my directions as a kid I remember being very confused by that! Beloit is where I failed as a college student the first time (in 1967-68). No freeway back then. The most enjoyable part of my nine months there was riding my bicycle through the countryside outside town. Jane
