We are talking about three meals per day; breakfast, lunch and dinner.

If you live in the deep south it might be called; breakfast, dinner and

supper.

Count the grams of carbs consumed for each meal, then do a pre-meal glucose

level check and a two hour post meal blood check.

If the two hour post meal blood check is 120 or lower, then she is consuming

the right amount of carbs for that meal.

After a while she will become expert at counting carbs and will gain mastery

over her glucose levels.

Once she is convinced she has it down pat, then she will not have to stick

her fingers as often.

How about salsa? or the usual veggie tray with a low,fat, carb dip? do

BTW watch low fat foods, they are low fat because they replace the fat with...

Yes we do bake. I have a sixteen year old daughter who can cook and

Crystal cooks. I also cook but I do not particularly like baking for

whatever reason.

Any ideas?

Now, this makes some sense. I thought I was losing my mind. We have a

mixture of Diabetic and non Diabetic " kids " . These are the " kids " who

went to school with me and I graduated in 1960.

What about the bananas?

Well, he sure got my attention I'll tell you that!

When I get answers like that from

Crystal I figure her sugar must be above 200. Hmm?

Thanks a lot for you help. Crystal's sugar is better than it has been

for a long, long time. She feels that there is hope for control and this

is a very good thing indeed.

Her reading this morning was 97 before breakfast and that is amazing for

her. It is not where it needs to be quite yet but we have only really

been working in earnest for a few days. Her reading after eating last

evening was 167. This is high but, trust me, it is down from what I have

seen it.

We will get this thing under control within a few weeks.

Thanks again for your support and help. Oh yes, when you were talking

about how to report the readings Crystal does not use insulin, she is

only taking oral medication. How should we report this for you to

review?

you can report her blood sugar readings and carb grams ate since really, at

this point, we are looking at adjusting her diet more than her medication.

For example:

pre brakfast

g 130

c 55

2 hour post meal test

g 120

pre lunch

g 99

c 15

2 hour post meal

g 145

....

and so on. Limit her meals to 15 grams a meal for now and have her eat her

meals 4 to 5 hours a part. The reason for this is to make certain to not

feed a high sugar and prolong it. Keeping meals 4 to 5 hours a part gives

the high sugar a chance to break. There are ways to quickly bring down a

high sugar. For example, If she is 120 to 150 at a pre meal test, cut her

carb grams back. If she is real high, like 180 or higher, skip the meal and

drink lots of water. Water makes the cells in the body be more receptive to

insulin. So, for example, if she is 160 or higher at a pre meal test, have

her skip the meal, drink lots of water, get checked two hours past skipping

it since you want to catch when the sugar drops.

This way, you break the high sugar so it does not prolong and cause damage

to the body. If she gets checked 2 hours past eating the meal and is 120 or

less, she can eat a little bit of food but really, not much at all since you

want to keep it down for the next pre meal test.

I did get a chuckle out of the suggestion to put doughnuts and bananas

on the snack tray. The suggestion was sort of a mistake. I believe Harry

was thinking I wanted to know what to do for the non-diabetics.

The reason I am called the " Ancient One " is I was one of the oldest on

another list. When I was a Junior some of the folks on the list were

just entering the Oklahoma School for the Blind and, therefore, they

have always considered me older than dirt. Even those who were only a

few grades behind me considered me one of the " older " boys. When you are

18 five years is a great distance. When you are well over the half

century mark five years is but a sneeze.

I am still raising my teenage daughters and that sometimes makes me feel

real ancient.

I remarried about two weeks ago and that makes me feel quite young.

each meter has about a 10% difference in testing results so that is normal

really. Not certain about the oral medication, Harry can help you with that one.

Glad to hear her sugars are getting under better control! Just check her sugar 2

hours past eating and if it is not 120 or less, then cut some of her carb grams

back for that meal. If you get her carbs down and her sugars running 120 or less

2 hours past eating, you may not need any oral meds.

How would one determine what is correct?

Actos is an oral medication for diabetics with insulin resistance. I took

Actos for several years until I had to get on insulin.

Actos allows the cells to accept insulin into them, thus lowering insulin

resistance by the cells.

By the way most diabetics on oral medications are likely to require insulin

injections some where between ten and fifteen years after initially being

diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic. In my case I had to start taking insulin

after 16 years of being on oral medications.

Today I strongly suspect had I not spiked my glucose levels by abusing carbs

all those years, I may not have become insulin dependent.

Counting your grams of carb consumption and a two hour post meal test is the

best way to avoid spikes and possibly becoming insulin dependent.

While taking injections can become normal place, I do not recommend it, if

it can be avoided. Dosing with insulin is a pain in the arse!

We are making a lot of headway on the levels. Crystal's readings have

been so high for so long her body is having to make some adjustments to

the lower readings. Her doctor is satisfied with what she sees now.

I expect to reach the 80 or below readings in a week or so. We have had

some mid seventies already and it is GOOD! The post meal readings are

now coming into the 115 or so category.

We won't talk about the occasional way over 120 numbers. They are a

whole lot less frequent than they were. In fact, they are rapidly

becoming the exception and this is excellent.

Considering that Crystal has had absolutely no encouragement and, even

worse, was unable to afford the meds necessary or have access to the

foods she needed in order to get this thing under control she is doing

remarkably well at dealing with the problem.

She now sees the light at the end of the tunnel and it does not appear

to be the headlight of an approaching train. Thanks for your advice and

support.

Oh yes, in case you wonder why you don't hear from Crystal directly, she

is dyslexic and has a terrible time putting it down in writing. Crystal

is sighted and does enjoy letting JAWS do the reading for her.

it is called the pizza effect. I.E the high fat is equal to, or higher than,

the carbs ate in the meal. Typical foods are Chinese, any type of pizza

other than brior hill, fried chicken, etc. The best thing to do is avoid

those foods or limit them. I.E 2 tiny sausage sticks at breakfast would be

ok instead of 1 large patty or a sausage and egg mcMuffin etc. So, avoid the

foods, don't try to combat them with oral medications since they will always

win smile.

Cy, sometimes if a person's blood sugar is dropping and you take the BS and

it is okay, you could try taking again in 15 minutes and see what happened

I have had that happen to me.

Hi Pam.

glad you are using a meter that works for you. Now that you have that

meter, use it smile. You'd be surprised at how often your body is wrong

at indicating to you sugar lows or highs. I.E I never let my body tell

me if I am low or high, it is not a blood meter smile. I use the blood

meter to let it tel me if I am low or high. I realize you can feel

physical symptoms at times but you'd really be surprised at how often

you are wrong if you get checked when you feel high or low.

I think I take care of this disease quite well. I can tell when my

Accucheck with Voicemate. It agree with the listener who that was

kind

enough to write me back and tell me she likes it too! I don't think

I'd go

back. Lifescan served me well for many years but I got tired of the

thing

saying not enough blood and this one is much easier to set, etc. Hope

ya, the meter is the best weapon in this battle so keep on keeping on. you

guys are doing great. Just cut back carbs to get her 120 or less in the

afternoons. Have you limited her meals to a set amount of carbs? I.E

breakfast/lunch/dinner 30 grams each for a total of 90 grams a day? Or, for

example, 15 grams per meal breakfast/lunch/dinner for a total of 45 grams a

day etc. If you get those constants in place, those constants will help you

iron out those high afternoon readings etc. The more constants you can get

in place, the easier it is to get that sugar in target range.

I'm not sharing this to harp on ya, you guys are doing great! This is just

suggestive advice is all.

Cy,I'm so glad to hear how Crystal's sugar has come down! my daughter just

found out that she has hypoglycemia (low blood sugar.) That seems unusual

to me, since many of the people in 's family are diabetic.

Have any of you ever posted suggested meals, or recipes that you have

adapted to use Splenda, or that you have found to be particular good

nutritionally and that taste good too? Any tasty and nutritious meal

suggestions would be appreciated, as I'm always looking for something

different.

*huge smile*. thanks for the update! I love it! The sweet smell of success!

We often chit chat on list that if all diabetics counted carbs and cut carbs

back, since most medications are to handle carbs, imagine how much damage that

would do to the pharmaceutical companies and sales. Hahaha. I mean look at you

two, already from cutting carbs back she has to cut her medications which IMO is

a good thing.

I know when I cut my carbs back I went from requiring 50 units of insulin to 3.

The Doc said Crystal needs to start cutting back on the morning

Glucovance. Her morning readings are fairly consistent in the mid 60s

now. She will probably only need one of the Glucovance tablets when it

is this low. Her mid afternoon blood sugar is around 80 to 90 from time

to time.

Well, I guess youall were correct. We have been doing this for what,

about two or so months?

When we started Crystal was running in the high 400s and now look where

we are.

Count them carbs! It really does work!

I am proud of you Crystal. I sure need to do the same. I have a lot of

trouble getting my sugars down. I realize a lot of it is in my diet. I

have ordered a copy of my last blood work from the dr., and I will will

share it with the list serve.

Hi guy, Cy here.

There is not one reason in the World you can not do the same.

The hardest concept for me to grasp was the simple fact that just by

watching the carbs you can make a dramatic difference in your blood

sugar levels.

, this is not rocket science either.

I have tried to make it very complicated but and Harry along with

keep putting me back on the correct path.

I will tell you that you MUST be VERY careful when reading labels.

The newest trend is " low carb " and everyone is trying to convince you

that their product is a " low " carb product.

They may try to sell you on " net " carbs. Don't believe it, go with total

carbs and you will be okay.

Wal-Mart does have some bread which is low carb, 7 to 9 carbs per slice.

Get used to pork skins, they are free. No! More! Chips!

Any bean which is good is high in carbs - oh well, in every life a

little rain must fall. Steaks are a very good thing to eat as is cheese

and lots of fresh veggies like broccoli, cauliflower and green beans.

Come on Injun, you can do it, just get with it.

Ancient one, can you give us an example of a good, low or no-carb meal? For

example, for breakfast do you cut out all meat such as sausage or bacon or

ham?

I'll bet that , Harry or could help a lot here.

I would offer a couple or so eggs, 1 piece of toast, some ham, bacon or

sausage and coffee. Low carb breakfast...

bacon, eggs, ham are all 0 grams of carbs so eat away. You cut out bread,

cereal, oatmeal, yogurt, milk, etc. those are al quick acting high carb

foods. For example, you could eat this for breakfast:

1 slice of bread 15 grams

2 eggs 0 grams

1 piece of cheese 0 grams

2 pieces of bacon 0 grams

that total meal is 15 grams hello good blood sugar!

now look at what most eat for breakfast

2 pieces of toast 30 grams

2 eggs 0 grams

1 cup potatos 30 grams

1 cup orange juice 30 grams

1 cup oatmeal 40 grams

total carbs 130 hello high sugar!
