Hmmmm. Wonder exactly what they mean by " humanizing

autism. " In some situations, from some people, I can

imagine that being a positive thing. Here, I'm not

so sure. It may mean " making the poor parentes

afflicted with autistic children (i.e., parents caught

up in the tragedy of the autism epidemic) more real

and appealing to potential funding agencies and major

donors. "

As founder of the Asperger Syndrome Foundation (the name of my

organization is on several of my cafepress.com items, including the

bumper sticker on my car...Autism- It's not like you think) I have

decided to found a new Foundation, the Autism Spectrum Foundation, and

as my first act as president, vice-president, founder and co-founder

is to announce the nominees for this year's AUTIE awards.

----------------------

In the category of best pro autism web pages the nominees in no

particular order:

jypsy and oddizm for the Autistic Adult Picture Project (I never said

I was humble)

Larry Foard for his " In Response to Lenny Schafer "

Phil Schwarz for his " Another Parent's Take on ABA and its " Defense " "

Connie Baker's - " Response to a Mother's Response "

's - A Critical Analysis of Kit Weintraub's Personal

Attack on Dawson

Klein - ABA Proponents Attack Autistics

Ralph - for all his body of work and that on behalf of

Dawson in Particular

A M Baggs for her work on autistics.org and especially " Past Present

and Future "

L. Tisoncik - webmaster of autistics.org for her great web site to be

shared with all those who have helped to make autistics.org what it is

today.

Moggy D's - Analysis of the Schafer Report

Alyric for her " Smoke and Mirrors " piece and " message on the

importance of consumer-driven services "

Jane Meyerding - for her full set of links to Dawson's writing and

comments pages and for being the cool head among hot heads on Aut

Advo. :-)

In the category of off line (real world) advocacy the nominees are:

Kassie Yelbis - for telling Lenny Schafer to his face what she thought

of his book and his attacks on Dawson.

Dawson - for working diligently to support the rights of

autistics through the fine use of the legal system in Canada.

t Mottron and Morton Ann Gernsbacher, et. al. for being true

human beings in spite of wearing lab coats and studying autism.

----

Since the nominating committee is the equivalent of Pooh, the bear of

very little brain, the committee is accepting suggestions for the

nominee pool.

Voting will be monitored by the accounting office of Schmurge, Frigo,

and Pollifax, of San Francisco.

The statuette has yet to be designed, I'm working on it.

My web site gratefully retires from the competition. The set

of links to Dawson's writing was supplied by jypsy, so she

gets the credit for that part of the site. And the rest of

your kind words are not web related.

Hey, Camille, maybe you should do what some of the bear

sites used to do. Each site owner would pick a " teddy

bear [or teddy bear artist, or teddy bear site] of the

month " and cite it prominently on her (or his) own site.

And you could have a links page where all the former

" autistic site of the month " links would accumulate.

Hi ,

I think we're dealing with a bit of cultural difference here,

in that we don't know how ABA is practiced in Denmark, and

you don't seem to know how it's practiced in US/Canada. If

you did know, you would probably see it differently.

>(Scientology excepted).

As someone else noted, that statement needs some work, but

I'll agree about the Scientology part. ;-)

I'd also agree that some of us are prone to black-and-

white thinking at times. It's something that everyone

needs to work on, NT or AC.

> We should be able to be overbearing with fanatics, but most

I could also agree with this statement, but have to point out

what may be a translation problem, because words are my thing.

Surely you meant " forbearing " instead of " overbearing " ? In the

sense of forbearance: hold oneself back when provoked, to be

patient. We might try to agree on defining " fanatic " also, as

some of us have experienced the damaging effects of ABA, and

are concerned that it is still going on with other kids. I

can see how some of us can be moved to activism.

That we are unique and intelligent is exactly why we don't

want that beaten out of us as we're forced to conform.
