RE: advice for Harry

This is a YMMV issue... you will have to experiment with this until you know

what it is for you. I know one glucose tablet raises me only 15 points and

not 20. I found this out over time. The statement was 1 glucose tablet will

raise a non-obese diabetic weighing 140 pounds 20 points since 1 gram of

carb will raise a person's bgs 5 points that is non-obese and 140 pounds. In

other words, that is just a starting point. Perhaps 1 glucose tablet may

raise your bgs 30 points. Also, your bgs have been high a lot and you are

not panned out yet running consistent regulated sugars quite yet. So, the

glucose you eat may just ignite the swing in bgs control etc. I'd say stick

with 1 tablet raises your bgs 20 points for now and in about 1 month, you

should know what it really does once you get your bgs under tighter control.

There is a test you can do but you must be regulated... prior to a meal, if

you are 85 and have been regulated for a few days. Eat 1 glucose tablet and

take no humalog and then in 25 to 30 minutes get checked and whatever that

raise is, that is what 1 glucose tablet will raise your bgs. This is a good

indicator, not a solid concrete solution yielding *exact* numbers but a good

estimation.

Harry, that 20 points is an average, so it may not apply for all people.

For instance, my BG the other evening was 47 so I drank a 6 oz. can of juice

with 24 G of carb. My BG went up to 92 only-theoretically, it should have

gone up much higher, but it didn't . This was about 2 h ours post reaction.

Re: advice for Harry

On second thought I haven't been able to figure this out either. Yesterday

when my glucose level was 63 and I took a 4 gram glucose tablet, which was

supposed to raise my glucose level 5 points for each gram of glucose or a

total of 20 points, I was not able to test an hour later or even two hours

later, but when I did test three hours later my glucose level had risen 31

points to a reading of 94. So evidently taking a 4 gram of glucose raises

my glucose level much higher than 20 points, since it raised it 31 points.

Now this doesn't make sense to me either.

Straighten me out about this thing, please.

Harry, It is looking like you need almost 2 units per gram of carb. Also,

it is also looking like you run a higher BG in the morning before lunch.

This is not unusual. I have always tended to run a higher BG in the

afternoon as well as the getting the dawn effect. Many diabetics tend to

run highter at certain times of the day. you just have learn when. It

will be interesting to see how your BG is in another 2 hours to see if you

need to give yourself a smaller ration of H at lunch time.

Aren't you on the pump? If so, this would explain why the high carb count

did not raise your glucose level higher, maybe.

That's part of it, but I take that into account when eeating something-it

still should have raised it more than it did despite the pump!

Harry.

This is the format we should see for the next 2 weeks and read down through

it:

9/21/2003

Last night:

Lantus 14

Pre-breakfast:

G 128

C 15

H x

2 hour post test xxx

pre-lunch:

g xxx

C 15

H xxx

Two hours post lunch:

G 84

pre dinner

g xxx

c 15

h xxx

2 hour post test

g xxx

and so on. Notice c is 15 for each meal smiles. That's what I want you to

see more than anything. Keep the carbs constant at 15! Without that in

place, your gunna have trouble getting your insulin to carb ratio down.

did you take to much H and caught your crash at 42 and perhaps it was so

I think I am so sensitive to insulin-just the opposite of Harry!I also think

that is bad stuff is going on with my kidneys, that the kidney is not

processing the insulin as it should, but retaining it. This is a comman

thing with people with failing kidneys. I go Wed. for the blood test again

to see if there are any changes.

Last night:

Lantus 15

Confusing results this morning:

7:15 A M my glucose level was 163

At 8:15 A M it was 179

After taking Lantus 15 units last night I ate some nuts, but since rising

this morning I have eaten nothing, since I was conducting an experiment. It

was surprising since my glucose level last night was 141. I ate about three

handsful of nuts and a beer, thinking the extra Lantus would take care of

the carbs consumed by wake up time, but apparently I was wrong. I was going

to consume one glucose tablet of 4 grams of quick acting carbs and measure

my results an hour later and again two hours later. I took the glucose

tablet at 8:15AM when the glucose level was 179

This is the only carbohydrate consumed so far today.

At 9:15AM my glucose level was 188

At 10:30AM my glucose level was 193

Conclusion:

I have concluded that eating nuts and drinking a beer at night can really

mess up glucose readings in the morning, and I am scratching the experiment

for now. I will do it at another time. Now I will check for pre-lunch

glucose level and dose Humalog to get my glucose level down to the normal

range, I hope.

Harry.

What was your bgs prior to bed? If you didn't check it or know, that is the

first mistake. You see, if you tested prior to bed and were 150, you

probably would have not ate anything or only 1 handful of nuts. Each handful

of nuts is 6 carbs. So, you had 18 carbs, 3 hand fulls, and 1 beer at 3

carbs. So, you consumed 21 carbs prior to bed and that is a lot especially

if you were already high sugared.

Your experimenting way to much IMO and I feel that this will contribute to

further frustration on your part. I think you need to just stick to 15 grams

per meal and do what we are suggesting for you to do IMO. This way, you get

good results in about 1 week but if you keep doing unplanned or odd

experiments it will only complicate this process.

Last night:

Lantus 15

Yesterday was a great learning experience, since I learned that a handful of

nuts is around 5 or 7 carbs instead of 1 carb. All day my glucose level ran

high and after supper last night I finally took a massive dose of Humalog

with supper of 15 units and this brought my post supper glucose level down

to a reading of 80. This is when I took the Lantus 15 units and a glucose

tablet at bedtime.

Hi Hary.

Glad you got your bgs down. Please understand with regards to this comment,

you can do what you want, it is your body smile. However, I noticed for

breakfast you ate 4 carbs? You had asked for help a day ago on humalog

dosing since you were having problems and so forth and me/ both gave

you some excellent advice. /myself recommended keeping a constant

carb gram per meal of either 10 or 15 and if you choose 4, that is fine, but

then you need to keep 4 grams for breakfast, 4 grams for lunch, 4 grams for

dinner for the next 2 weeks to get the insulin to carb ratio down for each

meal. That is 12 a day and would you really be happy with that? If you don't

keep your carb grams consistent for each meal, you will not get the system

down. I won't harp anymore on this point but if you *do not* keep your carb

grams at a consistent value for each meal, meaning 15 for breakfast, 15 for

lunch, 15 for dinner, and keep that for 2 weeks straight, then you will not

get this to work Harry. I am assuming for lunch you won't eat 4 nor for

dinner will you eat 4 and adjusting those carb gram constants to different

values will only further complicate things. I think 4 grams is a bit low IMO

smile. Ok, am off my soap box smile you know what to do now it is just a

matter of you sticking to your guns and doing it so you can get the system

to work for you smile.

regards,

The question mark after c 15? for lunch is due to the type of bread I ate.

I had sour dough bread, but I thought it seemed large to me. In fact this

one slice of bread was as big as one and a half pieces of regular bread.

Any how this type of bread was supposed to have 13 or 14 carbs in it, but I

think it has more, but don't know how much.

Probably a pretty good plan. Estimating high when it comes to carbs

consumption is probably a lot safer than estimating low, since in my case a

gram of carbohydrate raises my glucose level around 7 or 8 points.

7 H at dinner worked for the past 2 days with 15 carbs Harry so why did you

change it to 8? You shouldn't have listened to that little voice LOL

As far as I know, I do not have an infection of any kind including a dental

one. I do not have a cold and I have suffered no injury. I consume between

45 and 60 grams of carbs per day.
