Great post Tom...I would be willing to bet it got most of us thinking...good stimulation for our cognitive functioning and reasoning abilities! Boy, I sure wish I had time to go into this one in depth!

My main point would be that we all have repressed anger...starts the moment we are born into the bright lights, rough hands of the Dr. and the slap on the butt to get our rage engaged! Any child learns early to repress anger or suffer the consequences. As adults, we learn to make choices...sometimes the wise choice is to repress anger toward worldly injustices.(Her statement may be doing immeasurable harm to thousands of MS patients who have to repress their anger toward her bigotted, self-important grandstanding, because they have no way of directing their anger to where it belongs - on her!!!)

So, if everyone has repressed anger, how does she explain the fact that not everyone comes down with MS???? Is she prepared to defend her statement that it is solely repressed anger that is responsible for those who do ??? I am so happy to see how intelligent the members of this group really are! (Of course she would likely state that 'all people with MS are also paranoid!')

If she really believes and is preaching this 'bullcrap,' and if she really is a licenced psychologist, I feel she should definitely be reported to whatever Pschological Association she is affiliated with and have her licence to practise revoked. The MS Society and Research Centers should also be made aware of her claims and challenged to do something about her defamation of their worth and integrity, considering the billions of dollars being poured into research, tests and trials! She should not be treating ANY MS patients!

Tom:- any way you can get this person's name, location and some documentation re her lack of competence? I would be willing to do a few letters too! In the meantime, all we can do is hope that the files of a million trojan worms and viruses will infect her computer and shut her down!

Now that I have expressed some of my repressed anger, I can get back to work! Have a great day everyone! Keep SMyelin!

anger or bullcrap

To All:

The other day there was a post by a psychologist that really surprised and offended me. I am interested in all of your thoughts regarding her post.

She said that she had about 50 MS patients. She made the statement that concluded the following:.........She said that all ms patients had hidden repressed anger with themselves, that it was subconscious, that because the anger was repressed caused the ms.

I responded quite emphatically that she was dangerous an detrimental to many ms patients for suggesting such a theory that she claims is a fact. I said that ms'er's have enough to deal with without that negative seed being planted in one's mind.

I have had ms and done very well for over 20 yrs. In all that time I have communicated with hundred's of ms'er's and found quite the opposite to be true. Most ms'er's are making the best of their circumstances and are not angry at themselves or anyone else for that matter. Yes, we surely have our times of anger but it is at the disease or the frustration that we may be experiencing and nothing more.

What she said is like saying "all" Italians are mafia or "all"

German's are Nazi's or "all" English are prudes or "all Irish are drunks.

What is really scary is that this "professional" is treating patients.

I would like to hear your thoughts.

Tom

Tom I reread your post and I jumped the gun on saying you had met with her.

I have been in one discussion group that I have seen people post some pretty crazy things before I think just to see what kind of response they get from there posted message. I have a feeling after her post that discussion group had something to talk about.

If you find a way to get her to join MSersLife maybe she can see we have MS but it does not control our lives. MSersLife members will straighten out her thinking.

Re: anger or bullcrap

Hi Bill,

I do not see or know her. It was a post that she made with another ms internet group.

You gave me a good idea and I will suggest it to her. She is from Sweden, I think.

By the way, I will send my book to anyone with ms or their caregiver if they cannot afford it. I have a second book coming out in Feb. or March and will do the same.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Regards,

Tom

Yeah....this "repressed anger" theory really pisses me off, too.

I remember a few years back I was friends with this woman who

was older than me......someone that I looked to as sort of a mentor.

At that time I was suffering from headaches that would sometimes

last two days. This lady kept asking me "what was I getting" as a result

of the headaches. She hinted around to me that I subconsciously "wanted"

to get the headaches because having them gave me some sort of payback,

you know.

Later, I found out that she used hormone replacement therapy, because,

as she put it, "she didn't like having hot flashes." At that point I became

totally disillusioned with her and ended the friendship. I wanted to say

to her, "Why can't you talk yourself out of those hot flashes?" What

are you "getting" as a result of your hot flashes? Why can't you use your

mind to control them?"

It totally pissed me off that she was able to blame her hot flashes on

something physical, beyond her control, but I wasn't allowed to do the

same with my headaches.

I chart my headaches and put a big smiley face on the calendar every

time I have a headache free day. When I don't have a headache I feel

on top of the world, like I can do anything! If there is some subconscious

reason why I WANT to have a headache I sure wish I knew what it was!!

Right now I have a medication that gets rid of my headaches, it has greatly

improved the quality of my life. But I still haven't given up the search for

the cause of my headaches.

It seems to me that if repressed anger caused MS then everybody would

have MS. Everybody has repressed feelings of some sort, I would think.

Hi everyone! I'm new to the group, but not new to MS. I have RRMS and was dxed 8 years ago (symptoms for 20 years). Overall, I'm doing well, and am still working.

I've read all of the posts to date regarding this topic, and it angers (definitely not repressed) that a psychologist would make such a statement.

I do not agree with her statement; but, it did get me thinking. How many times do we hide the "invisible symptoms" from our bosses, family, friends, etc? I know that my "survival of the fittest" mentality kicks in when I'm having symptoms that I can hide. I tend to push myself beyond limits to "prove" that people with MS are not "weaker" than those without MS. (Actually, I believe that we are WAAAAAY stronger for living with this disease). Example...I recently had a bout of optic neuritis, and felt that I had to hide it from my employers. My fear was that if they knew about it, they would try to use it as against me in some manner.

My point of this post, is that while many of us may be angry from time to time while dealing with the MS, I question whether it's a function of our ability to deal with the disease or (my hypothesis) a function of society's inability to adapt to individual differences and the unknown.

Sorry to be sooo lengthy for my first post!
