Guest guest
Last week I asked this older gentleman, who lives across the hall and about 20 ft away, if he could drive me back from the hospital in Buffalo on Wednesday. He said he couldn't, as he babysat on weekdays, but he knew someone who might be able to. I happened to see him Saturday, and he said he talked to her, and she Would be able to do it. I wanted to get in touch with her and work out the details, and he said he would call her and arrange it. I saw him when I got home from work to- day, and he told me that she couldn't do it, she had to take someone else to a hospital that day! I don't know what happened, doesn't sound right to me. I was kinda pissed off, but couldn't think about it for awhile. I tried to decide what to do, how to get there, what to do with my cat, did I really want to stay overnight, etc., but couldn't figure out anything. So I spaced out on TV for awhile instead. Now I realize that it's better not to have to depend on someone else, and Mooncat would be happier to stay home than to go to the vet's or stay at someone else's apartment. He didn't like it the few times I've left him at the vet's for a few days before, and wouldn't like it any better now. I'll leave a whole can of food out for him in- stead of the half-can he usually gets for breakfast, and I'll get some of that moist cat food in a bag for his later meals. I know cats can survive for several days without food, and this will only be for one day. I'll have to stay overnight in the hospital at Buffalo. I don't expect to like it any more than Mooncat would like to be in a cage at the vet's. Can't think of any other way to arrange it. On the other hand, being independent often feels better, doesn't it? I have left my cats overnight a few times. One thing I do is leave a second (largish) bowl of water, just in case the first bowl gets tipped over somehow. Getting out of the hospital will feel *so* good. :-) Jane

I have a bowl that has a place where you can screw in a 2-liter soda bottle of water, and it keeps the bowl full as long as there is water in the bottle. It has a relatively wide base and is pretty stable. That will last at least a week (although I would never leave my cats unattended that long). I also leave a regular bowl out, in case there is a problem with the 2-liter one. That, and a good supply of dry food, will last a few days easy. I would not be concerned about the cat going hungry or thirsty as much as I would be afraid they would get too upset. My guys get very upset when I leave them for more than a day. My great grandma used to have a different way of ensuring her dogs and cat would be watered if she forgot to fill their bowls... she left the toilet lid up all the time.
