Guest guest Posted June 12, 2006 Report Posted June 12, 2006 The first thing to do about SSDI is to call Social Security for an appointment. This sets the date for the start of your disability period (and your Medicare will start two years from that date). Accept a telephone appointment -- it is easier on you to talk on the phone. They will send you paperwork to fill out -- enter EVERYTHING you have wrong with you and the pain/discomfort it causes, etc. Don't be shy -- I'm not saying to lie, but enter the worst case scenario (I had IBS with diarrhea and I described how I'd go to the store and the diarrhea would catch me and I had to wash up and throw away my underpants!) As I said, worst case scenario. You really don't need a lawyer for the first go-around, or the second either. The third (in front on the Law Judge) would be where the lawyer comes in. Remember, don't leave anything out! Good luck to you... Nina in Maine Quote
