Guest guest
This has been something I struggled with, because I get so outraged from the sound that is difficult to be calm. I had to go to a lot of therapy to finally figure out a way to tell friends, professors, and strangers about my condition. It's hard to be calm when the sounds triggers your emotions. This is what I have been saying and it seems to be working. I say sorry to bother you, just to let you know I have a hearing condition called hyperacusis/4S which means I am unable to filter sound and whistling (or whatever the sound is) hurts my ears. Almost everyone apologizes and some ask more questions. I thank them and say I appreciate it. I also say I have been to a doctor who diagnosed it, so it doesn't sound like I'm being a control freak, but that it is an actual medical condition. The thing is though that people forget. Popping their gum, whistling, etc are habits. Sometimes when I look at them they stop and say sorry. But when people forget it's awkward having to explain everything again. So another angle I just learned from therapy is to ask them in advance what would be the best way to remind them in the future if they do the sound again, should I remind them by raising my hand, asking them to stop or whatever works best for them so they don't get offended. I haven't tried this one yet, I'm sure I will someday and I'll let you know how it works. In school and new work places I always tell them in advance. But they forget too sometimes. It is a constant battle. Best of wishes for finding a good technique. Hope this helps a little. I would love to hear others ideas too.
