Re: Has anyone taken the Empathy Quotient test?

I just took the EQ test and got a 69! Very high in empathy, so no Asbergers for

me. I never thought so, because I've always been extraverted.

It is strange that 4S seems to have, possibly the extremes on both end of the

empathy scale. I posted a couple of months ago that I felt that my sensitivity

to sounds was due to my empathy to peoples stressful expressions (gum cracking,

clicking pen, eating fast, etc.

I think you meant to say a score of 32 or less indicates significant Asperger qualities.Sent from my iPad

I have done it several times (just to make sure!) and keep getting scores around 9-12. Yes, I am diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, so those scores are no surprise to me.

If you want to check out your self-diagnosis of Asperger's, try the AQ Test as well, if you haven't done so already:

http://aq.server8.org/

Score of 32 or higher indicates significant Asperger qualities, to a similar degree to a person diagnosed with the condition.

We are on the same page here, but at the time of your post we were discussing the EQ test and not the AQ test, right? Just check the topic of this thread! No confusion here at all!Sent from my iPad

Nope. You are confusing two different tests. :-)

The EQ Test (Empathy Quotient) uses a low score to identify Asperger's syndrome or high-functioning autism, because Aspies are supposed to be low in empathy.

The AQ Test (Autism Spectrum Quotient), which is the one I was recommending as a followup to the EQ Test, uses high scores to identify Aspies - and I was saying that a score of 32 or more on the *AQ* Test indicates autistic characteristics equal to those who are diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome.

I must say that it was an eye-opener indeed. I always felt different as a child, but could never put my finger on what that was! Mostly just wanted to be left alone so I could focus on my interests. Around 18 years old I became very focused on music, which allowed me to be left to my interests!Sent from my iPad

Rather like me: INTJ (strong INT, borderline J). AQ of 33 (when I was trying to be conservative). EQ down below 15.

Diagnosed Asperger's by a specialist who was recommended by Tony Attwood.

Work in IT and number-crunching types of research.

Have at least two near relatives who are probably on the spectrum too.

Getting diagnosed in my 50s was a huge "penny dropping" experience: "Ah, now I understand..."

This might shed a bit more light on things! I appear to be the "cats meow" of Aspie-dom as a INTJ, EQ of 17 and AQ of 35.

Hi ,

I realize my AQ score is a bit shy of 32, but it's still high enough to be a

fairly strong indicator. I don't think my ability to empathize with others

cancels out the many other things that point to, shall we say, my " Aspie-ness. "

Granted, a self-diagnosis is not definitive--but something is up with me and

always has been. Aspergers, or something on the Asperger spectrum, makes perfect

sense.

Oh, I'm an INTJ.

Cheers,

Jay

Good Day,

I took the Empathy test and mine came back at 24. I took the Autism

Spectrum test and came back at 31. I have never been diagnosed with

anything other than depression and anxiety. I take wellbutrin and zoloft

daily, they do not help with my 4S, but helps me somewhat with the anxiety

issues pertaining to my 4s.

Exactly! I'm not saying you're an environmentalist but me being an environmentalist has really opened my eyes. People can really suck sometimes. It's all about Me, Me, and Me.

It's not 'cause I'm autistic. It's 'cause I'm quite jaded and have lost all faith in humanity some years ago. (shrug) I reserve compassion and faith for animals and individuals whom I respect and think deserve it.

>I haven't taken the test on this website, but I would take it with a grain of salt, as it looks like it is just someone's personal home page. Also I don't believe that the last word is out yet on autism and low empathy.

80% of people diagnosed with Asperger's or high-functioning autism score 32 or

more in the AQ Test. That means, about 20% score below 32, sometimes quite a bit

below.

Simon Baron-Cohen, who devised the AQ Test (and the EQ and SQ Tests), has

published some further articles where he divides people into " broader autism

phenotype " if they score 23-28; " medium autism phenotype " if they score 29-34;

and " narrow autism phenotype " if they score 35-50. If you understand population

statistics, these ranges represent one, two and three or more standard

deviations above the mean.

Your score of 29 is to " autism " what an IQ of 130 is to intelligence - " gifted " ,

but not quite enough to get you into Mensa. A person with a score of 29 could

have Asperger's syndrome, but it is somewhat more likely on average that they

don't.

In any case, you have the " medium autism phenotype " , which means you do have

significant Asperger-like characteristics, though probably not enough to get a

diagnosis. If you have significant problems (and being here means that you do

have significant sensory issues, I would think) you might look for a specialist

in autism spectrum disorders who is familiar with Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

(CBT). They can assess whether you have Asperger's (or might have qualified

once, but don't now) and also give you CBT for managing your 4S (see Darlene's

posts to see how that works).

That is what I have done - or rather, am doing. I have been assessed and

diagnosed, and am now in the early stages of CBT.
