Guest guest
I am setting up an IMP practice soon. Wondering how folks accept plastic. I am attracted by Google and Pay Pal- well established and relatively inexpensive 1.9-2.9% + $0.30 per transaction. TheSiteWizard reports that Pay Pal is easy to set up. Square.com also appeals at 2.75% per swipe using a smart phone. Unsure how to best integrate any payment system in practice and accounting software. Guest guest
Wondering the same thing, and looking forward to responses. .....From the pt's perspective, I imagine the easiest is being able to use their credit card... going thru paypal or google are added steps if pts don't already have accounts. Guest guest
We have a paypal account for patients that want to pay online. We use the merchant account through our clearinghouse ( gateway edi ) which has rates competitive to Costco and we are considering using their portal that allows patients to view and pay their invoices online, presumably using our existing merchant account. With more and more people moving to HSA accounts, takin plastic is a necessary evil. I am setting up an IMP practice soon. Wondering how folks accept plastic. Guest guest
I use a few methods.I use intuit for my merchant services. I never pay attention to all the various rates for different cares but basically a few months back reviewed total incoming charges and total service fees and it averaged about 3-3.2%. I bought a USB card swiper on ebay that works perfectly in the office. I can also use a smart phone to make charges but dont need this feature. at home we use quickbooks so other charges can run directly through that. For me that's useful because all my patients are entered in quickbooks and that is how I manage my non-covered benefits fee. Being able to run cards through quickbooks is useful there. We also use intuit billing manager which allows us to send out invoices for free and includes a link to pay by CC which has been working great.I also have a paypal account and a link on my website for that. Services charges average 3% for those and it get's used less than once per month, especially since we've set up the email invoices through intuit How much time you spend on this depends on how much CC charges you think you'll be getting in a year. I only had $35K in patient visit related payments since 10/09 and probably at most 1/2 of that was CC - thus the different for me in 2.5% versus 3.5% in services fee would only be about $200 over 18 months. Thus, not worth a lot of time and effort to try and find the absolute best rates. I use frontstream/argofire thru online portal. Has nice features: auto reoccurring payment (for monthly/annual fee), email PT receipt in realtime, payment plans. Cost is comparable w others. To your good health, Evan H. Guest guest
But can't save Pt info on file and does not do recurring charges ( great if you have retainer fee). I am now just waiting for my Elec merchant contract to end. Costing me an extra $20 a month. Will be done in nov. Using Transengen and love it. Scan in Eob and email to Pt and charge their card. Guest guest
Like Dave, I use Intuit Merchant Services through Quickbooks. Easily downloads transactions and does recurring payments. Throught the Quickbooks makes and sends email invoices and statements, prepares tax related reports, etc. I would definitely look at that if you are using Quickbooks for your accounting. Prices were the same or better when compared required monthly minimums, fees, etc.SharonSharon McCoy MDRenaissance Family Medicine10 McClintock Court; Irvine, CA 92617 PH: (949)387-5504 Fax: (949)281-2197 Toll free phone/fax: www.SharonMD.com

Guest guest
The Google product is called Google Checkout and is mainly a shopping cart solution. You can use it for a webstore or to send invoices but cannot use it to run cards at the point of service without breaking Google's Terms of Service and using a weird process that would involve sending yourself an invoice, and then processing the payment. Many people are disappointed when they find out that you cannot simply type in the patient or buyer's credit card number and process the pmt with GC. eBay's Virtual Terminal can be used for point of service payments, but is designed to take phone orders. It has a monthly fee and costs a little more than traditional merchant accounts because the transactions are classified as CNP or card not present(higher risk of fraud when the card is not present). If taking credit card payments is a requirement, you should look for a traditional merchant processing account. There is hardware to lease or purchase and fees of 2-3% to pay. Debit cards can save fees if the transaction is more than $30, but again there is required hardware(pin pad). Call your bank and ask them if they offer credit card processing. Or call a processor like First Data directly. The main thing with a merchant account is the % fees charged. Make sure you are as direct to the processor, or 'wholesale', as you can be. Costco also has business merchant accounts as do the other warehouse clubs and you can get some good deals including hardware this way.
