Hi All,

Just my two cents worth....consider sending samples out to a lab for

microbial testing. Take a look in our files section for labs that do this sort

of

testing. I have found it much more reliable and more cost effective---and less

trouble---to simply send samples to the lab on a regular basis. Just ask for

an APC for mold/yeast/fungus/bacteria. The APC is different from a challenge

test. It will let you know whether or not your product is " clean " ....it will

not tell you whether or not your preservative system is adequate to withstand

" microbial challenges " over time. These tests can be done for less than $20.

This is exciting.

Are you using Biovert alone or are you using other preservatives?

Are you using a standardized test like the USP or the CTFA?

Can you provide the ingredient list for the product that will challenge tested?

I would add Biovert when the formula is cooling down since Biovert

should not be exposed to process temperatures in excess of 40ø C.

I don't think it makes any difference. You could look at these

suggested formulations for guidance.

Good question. You should contact the vendor.

>B) What would be the recommended doseage for each?

I would stick with the manufacturers suggestion:

For maximal effect the substrate solution should be dosed at

1% by weight and the enzyme solution at 0.05% by weight.

As far as I can see, compatibility with cationics, temperature, pH and

microorganisms as your biggest concerns.

Quoting from the Biovert brochure

http://www.archpersonalcare.com/Products/Product.asp?ID=139

Compatibility

Fully compatible with anionic, nonionic and amphoteric surfactants,

protein additives and most fragrances. High levels of cationic

surfactants within a formulation can antagonize the system.

Temperature

Biovert should not be exposed to process temperatures in excess of 40ø

C.

In elevated storage trials, typical emulsion based products containing

Biovert are able to withstand BP challenge testing after more than two

months storage below 40ø C, three months at 37ø C, six months at 35ø C

and over two years at 25ø C.

pH Considerations

For optimal performance, a target pH of between 4 and 6 should be

considered, however, the system can perform effectively outside these

limits. To prevent pH drift in formulated products it is recommended

that a buffer system is used in conjunction with Biovert.
