Once again, to make sure we are all on the " same page " . The two materials we're discussing are Croda products: Incroquat Behenyl TMS and Incroquat Behenyl TMS-50. The Herbarie sells Incroquat Behenyl TMS as BTMS Conditioning Emulsifier. I spoke with Lanese and also Abjihit Bidaye in technical and explained our questions. With regards to your inquiry, we have never established an actual HLB number to Incroquat Behenyl TMS or TMS-50. They are both excellent oil in water self emulsifiers. This means that they have an HLB greater than 7. I cannot guesstimate on the number because I would not be accurate. I don't believe that an HLB value has ever been assigned to a quaternized material due to the complexity. I hope that this answers your question. Sorry that I could not be exact. Thank you. Basically, the regular BTMS will have more viscosity due to more fatty alcohol content. The BTMS-50 will be more substantive and less viscous, but this can be compensated by adding more fatty alcohol to formulations. They are comparable in their ability as emulsifiers.
