FORMAL LEGAL CHALLENGE TO “NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND” IS FILED IN COURT by Several school districts around the country have rejected Federal money under the No Child Left Behind Act (generally referred to as Title I) assuming that will relieve them of the responsibilities under the recent amendments to that Federal education act.

And now, the Reading, Pennsylvania school district has sued to overturn the law as it applies to them, according to the New York Times, January 2, 2004.

Conferences will be doing a day long workshop on No Child Left Behind in Reading on January 29, 2004 and in Pennsylvania’s state capital, burg, on January 30.

A new toll-free information resource provides superintendents with key information about the historic education reform law, No Child Left Behind, U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige announced today.

The new resource line—1 (888) NCLB-SUP, or 1 —offers information about all facets of the No Child Left Behind Act, including accountability and measuring school progress, supplemental educational services such as tutoring, public school choice options, Reading First grants that help students learn to read at an early age, and details on the highly qualified teachers provisions of the law

Statement by Acting Deputy Secretary Gene Hickok in Response to Education Trust Reports on Teacher Quality and High School Dropout Data Acting Deputy Secretary Gene Hickok today issued the following statement in response to a report by the Education Trust on the Department's role in collecting data on teacher quality and high school dropouts:

"I believe that the Department and Education Trust share the same mission: ensuring that all children, regardless of race, accent or zip code, receive a high-quality education. However, I strongly disagree with the conclusions of Education Trust’s two recent reports, Telling the Whole Truth (or Not) About High School Graduation, and Telling the Whole Truth (or Not) About Highly Qualified Teachers.

"The Department of Education recognizes the importance of data collection because it impacts how accountable the education system is to its customers—the students and parents of America. Thanks to the No Child Left Behind Act, a light is being shined upon every state in the nation about the quality of every child’s education, including the qualifications of every teacher. Thanks to the vigorous data collection efforts in this Department, parents now know whether their child’s teacher is highly qualified—information to which they have a right. This simple concept is actually quite revolutionary. Prior to No Child Left Behind, parents merely assumed that all teachers were qualified.

Picard: Report not telling whole truth December 29, 2003

BATON ROUGE - Education officials in Louisiana and 10 other states are criticized in a national report for failing to comply with a requirement of the No Child Left Behind federal education act, but the state's top educator says the report is wrong.State Superintendent of Education Cecil Picard said that The Education Trust report "Telling the Whole Truth (or Not) About Highly Qualified Teachers" released last week misstates Louisiana's compliance with NCLB.
