Guest guest Posted January 20, 2011 Report Share Posted January 20, 2011 We use the the Midmark EKG and spiro. Works great with our EMR even though we don’t use a direct EMR link. The Midmark can save its data to a Microsoft Access data file on the local PC or a networked drive as delivered without an EMR interface. We save our data via a wireless PC that connects to a network drive on the server. The Midmark help desk will walk you through all the steps to set it up - perhaps 15 minutes on the phone with Midmark to configure. Best to locate the Midmark data file on the server where it gets backed up as part of regular backups. Not having a direct EMR link means we enter the patient name/identifier information on the laptop as part of the Midmark data file. If you have to pay extra for the direct link it’s probably not worth having unless you use it a lot. I primarily got it to save space vs a traditional machine w/ a cart. Advantages: - looks super cool and cutting edge (pts love it), - uses plain paper as i print to my networked printer (saves cost as well as the decay of thermal paper over time for those w/ paper based charts), - gives a nice tracing, seems more readable, " faxable " and scanable than the thermal paper ones. the printouts just look better. - interfaces with some emr's, although not mine and at additional cost - main advantage- size- the whole thing fits into a plasitc box that is about 4 " x 8 " x 12 " and sits on a shelf, taking up no floor space. Disadvantages: - doesnt interface w/ my emr (I chose the Wellch allyn because it came in a bundle w/ a spirometer that total cost less than the midmark) - finicky drivers, although this may be my computer. the netbook runs windows xp, so, compared to my old ecg which you just turned on and it worked, this will occasionally have trouble loading the drivers when you plug in the usb (Windows xp usb finicky...Nahhh!) - likewise, the software is not super polished. it gets the job done, though. - it is more sensitive to the quality of the electrodes...my previous machine, a 15 year old HP model, worked well w/ any old electrodes. This one will only work with higher quality electrodes. This may be due to the newer digital tech and common (vs the analog capture of teh old machine), or particular to the wellch allyn. - have to boot up the ekg netbook to use the ekg machine So, aside from having to deal with windows, it is a good alternative. Space saving and cost of paper are really the only advantages, vs disadvantages of less usability than a traditional ecg machine, which is a purpose build appliance. Some of my issues may be because i'm using a low end computer, while it may just be because i'm using a computer as an ecg machine. I think if cost is the same, if floor space werent my issue i'd probably recommend a dedicated machine. While i like technology, i don't love this pc based ecg that much, although it gets the job done and the price was right. Hope this helps.
