>Hi there, I'm working on a new salt scrub and I'm not sure what preservative I

should use. Can you please give me a suggestion? I'm thinking liquipar

optima....?

>1000g Avocado Oil

>200g Macadamia Nut Oil

>2g Mango Butter

>1000 Sea Salt

>500g Epson Salt

>200g Silica Gel

>60ml Fragrance or Essential Oils

If we assume that the density of the " Fragrance or Essential Oils " = 0.9 grams

per milliliter, then 60mL = .54 grams.

If we re-group your recipe, separating out the salts, we have:

1000g Avocado Oil

200g Macadamia Nut Oil

2g Mango Butter

200g Silica Gel

54g Fragrance or Essential Oils

1000g Sea Salt

500g Epsom Salt

I separated the salts out of the calculation because they're biological inert.

so the calculations will be based on this recipe:

1000g Avocado Oil

200g Macadamia Nut Oil

2g Mango Butter

200g Silica Gel

54g Fragrance or Essential Oils

which is equal to this formula:

68.68% Avocado Oil

13.74% Macadamia Nut Oil

0.14% Mango Butter

13.74% Silica Gel

3.71% Fragrance or Essential Oils

The first thing that I noticed is the Silica Gel.

I've never used Silica Gel in a scrub but 13.74% seems like a lot.

Are you sure this is correct?

If you add 5g of Liquapar Optima to your recipe,

1000g Avocado Oil

200g Macadamia Nut Oil

2g Mango Butter

200g Silica Gel

54g Fragrance or Essential Oils

5g LiquaPar Optima

you have 0.34% Liquapar Optima in your scrub without the salts:

Avocado Oil 68.45%

Macadamia Nut Oil 13.69%

Mango Butter 0.14%

Silica Gel 13.69%

Fragrance or Essential Oils 3.7%

LiquaPar Optima 0.34%

LiquaPar Optima at 0.34% should be more than enough preservative.

So your recipe should look like this:

1000g Avocado Oil

200g Macadamia Nut Oil

2g Mango Butter

200g Silica Gel

54g Fragrance or Essential Oils

5g LiquaPar Optima

1000g Sea Salt

500g Epsom Salt

Ok I will lower my percentage of the Silica Gel to about 8%. This will be my

first time working with Silica so I am very open to your suggestions.

What did you mean by leakage? Do you mean leaking out of the jar? I plan on

packaging it in one-use heat-sealed type bag.

So when I put my formula into a % with that change, I should use 4.7g liquaPar

Optima.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it as always.

Leave the level of LiquaPar Optima alone.

This recipe

1000g Avocado Oil

200g Macadamia Nut Oil

2g Mango Butter

110g Silica Gel

54g Fragrance or Essential Oils

5g LiquaPar Optima

is equal to this formula

72.94% Avocado Oil

14.59% Macadamia Nut Oil

0.15% Mango Butter

8.02% Silica Gel

3.94% Fragrance or Essential Oils

0.36% LiquaPar Optima

or, better yet, round off the percentages

72.5% Avocado Oil

15% Macadamia Nut Oil

0.15% Mango Butter

8% Silica Gel

4% Fragrance or Essential Oils

0.35% LiquaPar Optima

At 4%, the fragrance/essential oils may be too strong and may pose a problem

with abraided skin.

Now you can make any size batch. Make your first batch, a small batch.

For example:

Here's what you would need to make up 500 grams

362.5g Avocado Oil

75g Macadamia Nut Oil

0.75g Mango Butter

40g Silica Gel

20g Fragrance or Essential Oils

1.75g LiquaPar Optima
