Nit all mothers are like that...my mother, for example (and this is one of the reasons we do Not communicate nor have we in years, nor Will we) said that while it was wonderful that I was having a child it was a shame that Rob was the father and his "inferior genetics" would taint my child, but hopefully her "superior genes" would be my child's saving grace. I am not kidding, she really said that. She and her "superior genes" btw whose own parents owned a dairy farm. She grew up milking and mucking cows. I guess that makes her superior.

MY MOTHER

Dear Group,

I do not want to offend anyone but I do feel the need to share this.

I have been thinking about my mom since my last post. She was saying that it was her fault I had MS and that she had been praying and had ask her church to pray with her for God to heal me of my MS and that I should be praying for that too. To this I said "Yes, I know God can heal because He has healed me before. But NO I will not pray for a healing of MS because I feel God allowed me to get MS for a reason." I still feel this way.

I do not know why I feel so compelled to share this but I will not question that feeling. I hope this is of some comfort to someone here.

Yeah, she actualy believes herself perfect, and she can do no wrong, and EVERYTHING that went wrong in her life (even stuff from before I was born) is MY fault..and where would she be if I hadn't messed her life up so?

What about the things she did to me? The lies? The utter betrayal? I suppose I *made* her do it? OF course...She is perfect, I am nothing but flawed...guess her superior genetics didn't rub off on me (Thank God!!!)

Anywhoo...she is well out of my life and that's where she will remain. I do not need that aggravation, nor does my family need that massive negative drain.

Sharon,

You are right. I need to give Mom a

break. It is hard for me to see my children in turmoil or pain.

Shouldn’t be any different for her.

Why is it that I can’t seem to apply

these principals to my own MOTHER?

I can understand your mother's thinking though and I don't think it's

all self-centered. I understand because I have gone through the same

thinking myself. Yes, I have MS. But I have gone through the whole

thing about " what did I do to my kids??? and my grandkids??? "

My daughter and my son both have neurological problems--Challis is here on the

group and it seems that she has MS. My grandkids have a variety of

neurological/neurobiological problems and I often think that it came from me

and therefore it's my " fault " . I think it's normal for a mother

to have those feelings. Now if a mother obsesses on it or if it truly

turns into a " look at me--I feel so bad about my children--so LOOK AT

ME " kind of thing... lol... then that's different.

A little bit of a mother's feeling of guilt is normal I think. A

lot of it is different and not helpful, is it???

Death and “dis~ease” have been in our world for a very, very,

Although we may not understand why we were

testimony to others of our faith, courage,

and integrity.

It’s hard to move past the WHY ME? Harder still for family that have

guilt thinking they “gave it to you”.

My Mother also struggles with this and I

find her to be a little self-centered in that thinking.

It’s not all about ME in this life.

Let's blame YOUR Mother and my dad. Okay? LOL

Our lives are enriched by the diagnoses we've found, in ourselves and our children. You've been a wonderful Grandmother and Mother, supporting and often leading the way. and I both had "special needs" as children, we just didn't know what they were. You managed life well, with more kudos warranted for all the struggles you faced and overcame. And you taught us how to face each thing with dignity and humor. That is your fault.

Love,

Challis

Thanks Akiba,

No way do I blame my mother for my life. She did the best she could do and I love her still. She died six years ago at the age of 75 years and 6 days. She felt that she was not a good mother to us but as I see it she was the best mother she could be and I think we all turned out well. We each have our problems and have learnt to deal with them. If we were wollering in selfpity or allowing these problems to overcome us it would be our fault not hers.

I was asked recently by my own mother if I felt MS was a 'curse"? My reply was that it has been a blessing because until I was faced with this I took things for granted, didn't see the joy in the little things life has to offer, rushed thru everyday for the payoff, and never really understood what it meant to take time to stop and smell the flowers. Well now I do, I am celebraing every litle bit of life the heavens offer me and I thanked my mom for giving me life so that I could enjoy this gift I have been given.

But, I would not wish them to be anyone other than themselves. I would not wish them cured. That would change who they are. Their disability has taught me so much and helped me find love and made our family whole. I was a single mother and met my sweet husband, who fell in love with me and my boys. No one would ever guess that they aren't his flesh and blood. That has created a bond so great between us all. To find someone who was so selfless to take on a single mom with 2 special needs kids is not an easy thing. I am blessed. I am

ill, but I am blessed. I no longer have to parent alone, and now I don't have to go through this illness alone. If I wasn't ill, I wouldn't need to depend on him as much. I used to be very prideful and hated to need anyones help. Now I see that I am not a burden. We do for eachother out of love and caring. I have become a better person, because of all the hardships I've had in my life.

lynn, you can turn MS into a blessing in your life. You are an inspiration to others when you encourage them, when they think you should feel defeated. You decide what your life is like. I appreciate you. Trista

I can understand your mother's thinking though and I don't think it's all self-centered. I understand because I have gone through the same thinking myself. Yes, I have MS. But I have gone through the whole thing about "what did I do to my kids??? and my grandkids???" My daughter and my son both have neurological problems--Challis is here on the group and it seems that she has MS. My grandkids have a variety of neurological/neurobiological problems and I often think that it came from me and therefore it's my "fault". I think it's normal for a mother to have those feelings. Now if a mother obsesses on it or if it truly turns into a "look at me--I feel so bad about my children--so LOOK AT ME" kind of thing... lol... then that's different.

A little bit of a mother's feeling of guilt is normal I think. A lot of it is different and not helpful, is it???

Personally, its my belfief that every generaton has the chance to make it better. It is really up to the individual to follow through on that. For Jerry and I, we recognize and accept that our childhoods were not the most pleasant or idyllic, but we have learned from them and so will make the childhoods of our offspring that much better for it. Love is the key and with the amount of love we are spreading to these two little peanuts, I know that they will turn out at least twice as good as me. At least that is my hope.

The mistakes will not be repeated, cannot be repeated. That is the one thing I will solemnly vow for all of my days.

I sure did blame myself for Charity's problems. I think about all the things I didn't do right and could have done better, right down to having to deliver her by c-section. I had alot of guilt about her speech delay, her failure to thrive, her lack of motor skills. I have had to try and move on from that tho and as hard as that has been, it is getting easier to see that I am a good mom and that I did not "DO" anything to her other than love and nurture her.

Trista
