Hi All,

Am new here and need some advice. After a long search I have found a really

good doc who I saw almost 2 weks ago now-he prescribed Cymbalta for me for

anti-depressant and also said it is good for nerve pain. well I have cirrhosis

from Hep C and the pamphlet on this new med states not to take if Hepatically

impaired so I dont want to take it-should I call the doc & tell him or wait for

next appointmnt next Fri I have been sick since I saw him so couldn't take it

anyway, but I don't want him to think I am not following his instructions-also

at the appointment he made it clear he didn't want his patients calling his

staff bothering them about their meds. He said one lady called all the time

since she had to mail her script & was worried about getting it there on time.

I have had such a horrible time this past year finding a good doc I do not

want to mess up this new one since he seems to good~~what should I do It is

almost too late to call anyway I just wanted some outside opinions?

Thanks,

Chris=FL

Hi

Since your doc has made it clear not to call and " bother " his staff about issues

with meds (in quotes, because I think it's not a good policy), I would not take

it and tell him why at your appointment. If you get any grief, calmly say " I

was following your office policy of not calling about meds, yet refusing to

potentially risk my life because I'm contra-indicated for this medication due to

the liver problems and the patient information says not to take this if

hepatically impaired, which I am. "

I would definitely call your pharmacist if you feel that you can't call your

doctor. Seems odd to me that he would tell you *not* to call (the turd!)

With the Hep, you REALLY have to be on top of things. I'd hate to see you

have more problems with that. If the pharmacist can't answer (I think he

should be able to) I would call the Doc anyway. Good luck.

My neurologist encourages calls from his patients if they have any questions at

all about anything, including medication. I would think that your doctor would

welcome the call? Just my thoughts.

Was the patient insert in a sample packet or in a prescription from the

pharmacy?

If the patient insert was from a sample packet, you will need to confront the

Dr. yourself. Your Hep C / impaired liver function status needs to be in your

chart, and your Dr. needs to be considering it in every choice that is made in

your pain care.

If the patient insert was from a pharmacy prescription, take the prescription

and the insert straight back to the pharmacy. Ask the pharmacist if your Hep C

/ impaired liver function status is in their computer, if it isn't why not and

if it is why you were given that prescription. Then have the pharmacist call

your Dr.

This is not petty whining. This is your life. If you have a good relationship

with a pharmacist who will help you even if the information was in a sample

packet insert, so much the better. But someone had better talk to that Dr.

about your impaired liver. I don't care how good he is about responding to your

pain issues. If he is going to be casual about your liver concerns and not want

his staff to take calls about meds that are hazards for you, you need another

Dr.

Yes thanks for the advice-this is how my previous long-term doc did things.

He always welcomed communication from his patients, but this new doc

(nuerologist) I have had is the opposite, but I am leaving him since he really

is not a

good doc at all in my opinion. He is always too busy and in too much of a

rush to even discuss things during my appointments. I have gone downhill

physically since seeing him too so I have now found a new doc who seems to be

very

good. I just do not want to getoff on wrong foot with him since I think he

will be such a good doc for me. It makes sense though to me that he would want

to know if I have a problem with the new med. Thanks again,

Chris-FL

Hi

Sometimes the warnings they put on prescriptions are kind of over the top.

My husband also has Hep C stage 4 and he takes some medications that are

counter indicated on the script warnings. You could also call your pharmacist

and ask them. Sometimes the dose is low enough that it doesn't apply.

Remember that when a drug is tested the test are done with heavy doses and

really

doesn't apply to someone taking the medication at a normal level. We found

this out from our pharmacist.

Depending on what your pharmacist says I would go ahead and call your

doctor. Did you tell him that your have Hep C? He might not be aware that

there

is a warning on the Cymbalta.

Good Luck,

Kathleen in NC
