Welcome to Coleen and to another member who had no profile listed so I

can't welcome you by name. It's always nice to say, " Hi! " .

I am sorry if diabetes is part of your life, but we are ready to help

you with any questions about this Not-one-fits-all disease.

Hi ,

As you've probably ascertained, I'm also new to the list. At 48, I'm

well into my fourth year as a type II diabetic. As a

programmer/gunsmith/firearms competitor, my obsession with precision

and record keeping has stood me in good stead, allowing me to gain

and maintain very tight control over the disease.

I have some rather large issues with the medical community in terms

of the " newly diagnosed/dangling in the wind " feeling that seems to

be fairly common. Our " support system " definitely seems to break down

at the point of diagnosis. However, this topic is a completely

different line of discussion.

My primarily issue deals with what appears to be a common attitude

displayed on various diabetes elists and by some national

organizations. ADA in particular seem to hint that the diabetic

should somehow be ashamed of the affliction (re: articles on testing

and/or injecting in public, etc.) The constant attitude I've seen in

the various lists I've sampled show that a large percentage of the

diabetics do indeed suffer from such images and significantly low

self esteem.

I recently attended a reception before the wedding of my Goddaughter.

Her mom is renowned for her cheesecakes (well, I least I think she

is) and I'd carefully horded my carb allocations and had " balanced "

my intake carefully so I could " afford " to have a piece of this

earthly heaven. I was sitting at the table with the groom's mother,

whom I'd obviously only recently met. This woman is exceptionally

intelligent, but when my Goddaughters dad (my college roommate and

best friend) made reference to my eating the cheese cake ( " You had to

squeeze that in, didn't you? " ) the woman reacted in the most amazing

manner. After asking if I was diabetic, she said she'd have to change

tables and watch me to see if I started acting weird. I was so

shocked, that I didn't retain the exact wording, hence my

paraphrasing.

Guys, my diabetes hasn't changed, one iota, who and what I am.

Granted, I watch my diet closer than I have in the past, and on the

order of an hour each day is consumed with testing, injection and

other diabetic administrative necessities, but MY life is unchanged

in any real sense of the word.

Where, then, are we getting these attitudes of (and these are actual

quotes from people I know) " diabetes has ruined my life, " " Now that I

have my death sentence, " and " I can't do ANYTHING I used to do " come

from? Is this simply a matter of some personality types making their

illness the central point of their lives?

Hi ne

I use to keep in touch with a person that lives in the Fort Wayne area and he runs a local MS support group.

Lynn do you plan to be at the MS meeting tomorrow night? I think I may go to it.

Bill,

I do not think I will be able to make the meeting tomorrow night We have a dr's appointment at four and the last time it took us three hours to get home and I was wore out. I have been thinking about that for a few days now and I really do not think I should. This is an appointment with 's lung dr and gets confused and misunderstands the dr or just does not hear him. If there are any changes then I will have to take care of that and make sure understands how it is supposed to be now.
