Hi guys,

I haven't posted in a while because I have been very ill. I am still not

well. Been battling Pneumonia for over a month now and have been sick for 2

months, plus we have been through 3 hurricanes.

I had to post on the Pet Question Topic because I have always had pets, I

worked a lot of my life in a Vet Clinic as a Vet Tech, helped volunteer at

shelters, and am currently helping several rescue organizations here in central

Florida.

As sick as I have been, and as much pain as I have been through, our pets

bring joy to my life. We have a male 2 year old, pure breed Collie. We were

fostering a female 4 month old Boxer Mix, but we decided to adopt her. We

also have 5 cats, and 3 new kittens.

The Collie, Singleton, was a rescue. A woman lived in our apartment complex

and decided she didn't want him and was going to take him to the SPCA. We

didn't have a dog at the time, and I always wanted a Collie, so I told my

husband to go get him before she took him.

Molly, the Boxer Mix, has a really sad story. The people that owned her let

her outside to fend for herself right before Hurricane Charley hit. She was

on her own for weeks. Got hit by a car. Severely malnourished, full of

worms and mange. When we started fostering her, they had cleared up the mange

and the worms, but she was (and still is) recovering from her injuries, that

weren't too severe. She is such a sweet dog.

As for the cats.... We'll start with Sable. We rescued her 3 weeks before

Halloween in 1998. She is all black. Mysti was a rescue as a kitten back in

1995. She is a long haired tiger cat. Tinker was a rescue, in 1999. He is

a big fat cat now. Tiger stripe and white. Witti was also a rescue in

1999. A gray tiger stripe. We rescued Calli this past May. She is a calico.

We didn't know she was pregnant when we rescued her. She had her kittens

June 11th, seven kittens. We kept 3 of the kittens. One male, Porthos (black

and white tuxedo), and 2 females, Aramis (the only calico out of the litter)

and Athos (an all black kitten).

We are totally at our pet limit now. You probably think we are crazy, but

it really isn't that bad to take care of all of them. My husband helps a lot

when I can't. I like to take care of the pets as much as I can because I

love them and it helps me keep busy as I can't work anymore.

My point is, I couldn't live without any of them. They are all the sweetest

pets you could ever want. Ten times unconditional love. Whenever I am very

sick or in a lot of pain, both the dogs, and several cats are there with me.

Singleton will sometimes get on the bed with me, but mostly likes to sleep

on the floor, on his dog bed, next to me. Molly lays right next to me and

won't get up until I do, and we have only had her 3 weeks. The cats make room

around me where ever they can. On the pillows, under the covers, etc. They

make me feel better physically and emotionally. And, yes, I do advocate

adopting pets from shelters, especially because those pets/strays/ferals days

are

numbered. The second choice is a good, reputable pet rescue organization.

They are in every state, and most states even have full breed dog rescue

organizations. I know of Collie and Greyhound rescue organizations here in

Florida.

Sorry for rambling. My point is that pets make wonderful therapy, if you

can take on the responsibility of owning one. = )

- My sentiments exactly!

And to all who stated that the pets give them such great joy in times of pain -

I wholeheartedly agree! They are wonderful companions and really sense when

people don't feel good. They will just sit beside you to make sure you are OK.

I love that about them....

Hope everyone is feeling well today...

Jan :-)

Vicki,

You and your husband are Angels. Bless you for taking in pets that are abused an

I hope your pneumonia goes away fast and for good! Those of you in Florida

and the SE have had a terrible time of it this year. I imagine all the stress,

along with the barometirc pressure changes and dampness has made your illnesses

worse than usual.

I'm as amazed by the people who thoughtlessly left their pets behind as I am

by the ones who refused to leave, endangering their own lives, because they

couldn't take their pets with them. (Although I must admit, I'd probably stay

with my beloved pets too!)

I made a decision today to try to get off Prednisone, now that Cymbalta is

working. Once I've been off for a while, I'd like to try Remicade, if my Dr.

will allow me. But more about that in another post on that subject.

Hugs,

Dix
