Guest guest
Hi Marty, A few years ago, one of my own dogs was diagnosed with cancer. We were competing in open and utility at the time. He had lost alot of weight quickly, when he first got sick, but I was able to rebuild muscle mass and strength even though he was on chemotherapy and high doses of pred. I did not have access to an underwater treadmill at the time, but that would have been tremendously helpful. Instead, we did alot of other therapuetic exercises. I think what also helped was a holistic support of Coenzyme Q10 (4mg/kg/day), L-carnitine (50mg/kg/day) and a high protein diet (I used Innova's Evo). We were able to compete again and finish his open title before I finally lost him. I use this combination alot with dogs on long term pred to prevent muscle wasting. I've also used the Coenzyme Q10 to help older arthritic dogs preserve lean muscle (and even regain muscle mass). I hope this helps. Franzini, CVT, CCRP (pending) Prednisone Hi, everyone, I have a question. A client of mine who is a veterinarian has a curly coated retriever with IMHA who has survived for a month so the prognosis is encouraging. She is on a course of Pred. 1mg/kg. The dog is a very active sporting dog. She had several questions. How long can a dog be on Prednisone before ligament laxity or damage is a concern? What is a safe dosage in regards to ligament health? What is a safe weaning period? Has anyone done water exercise for a dog on Prednisone as a means of prevention of muscle atrophy and diminished stress on supporting tissues? Guest guest
Hi Marty I know you probably don't want anymore incidental reports, but I have a couple clients with dogs on Pred competing in agility at the highest level. One with IMHA, 3 with lymphoma. The are all on Standard Process Ligaplex II, as well as some other SP Products to support ligament and connective tissues. They all have intense owners that are militant about exercising and keeping fit(running, swimming, therapy balls, treadmills, etc). They are all on high protein diets (like 's post). The supplemental things may be what is keeping them going, and doing well. It certainly doesn't seem to hurt. Just my 2 cents, Kathy Topham, DVM, CCRT Prednisone Hi, everyone, I have a question. Guest guest
I also have a personal dog with suspected brain cancer- ruled out all other causes of geriatric grand mal seizures but have not done MRI to confirm tumor and his seizures are under control with phenobarb. I have not start pred- want to hold off on that as long as possible to avoid any more muscle wasting. Anyway I was curious about your dosing with CoQ10 and Carnitine. Do you know of studies with CoQ 10 for muscle wasting vs heart and gum disease? I know Carnitine has some positive studies for muscle wasting but my vet started my dog on 500mg and said if I wanted to go up high- he is 70lbs to go up slowly because some dogs get diarrhea on higher doses. She also said it is a high fat diet that has been shown to be helpful with lymphoma dogs but not helpful with many other types of cancer (study done at CSU) and people mistakenly think it is high protein. Any other studies for cancer diet in dogs? Rosemary Hegarty PT, CCRT Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry Prednisone Hi, everyone, I have a question. Guest guest
Hi Rosemary, I have a veterinarian friend who is certified in holistic and homeopathic medicine and she was very helpful to me during my own dog's treatment (prior to my rehab experience). She uses the CoQ10 and L-carnitine to battle what she calls "pred head". I'm sure there are studies out there, but I experienced first hand how well it worked. My dog had lost 25# very quickly and had severe muscle wasting in his head and body. Along with the high protein diet and exercise, I was able to rebuild muscle mass and strength. I've also used it with other dogs on pred, along with osteoarthritic dogs losing muscle mass and have gottten favorable results. I haven't experienced diarrhea with any dogs I've used L-carnitine on, but it never hurts to be cautious. This same veterinarian recommends the high protein diet for all her cancer patients. It also makes sense if you're trying to build muscle. I haven't heard anything about high fat. If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me. Good luck with your dog.
