I don't know either whether Neurontin has been clinically shown to cause

memory loss. From my own experience with it, though, I'd say it definitely makes

an already existent memory loss worse. I have short term memory loss as a

result of a series of TIAs I had in Feb of 1992. I was on Neurontin for quite

some time, and was weaned off of it a couple years ago when I plateaued on it

(I was on it for about 3 years, if memory serves...no pun intended <g>). I

originally thought my horrible memory lapses during that time were unrelated,

just a byproduct of my migraines and insomnia getting worse. But after I went

off of it, the memory issues got better (back to the point they were at before

I went on the drug).

It seems to me that there's enough anecdotal evidence to warrent further

study by scientists and extra caution by patients...

I have fibro, and have had that problem even before that! But fibro does cause

it or make it worse. Supposedly, there is something called " substance P " , which

is like a rusty brown powder that sits on the neurotransmitters and blocks

memory.

But it's not like Alzheimer's. You might remember something one day, and

not the next. That's because this powder-like substance can move around.

Couldn't remember something one day, and gave my head a really good shake,

hoping it would help! lolol It didn't. But I did remembers later that day.

You'll sometimes see people write " the fog is heavy today " - they're

referring to fibrofog.

I have ankylosing spondylitis....I've been taking neurontin for almost

two years....it helps with the pain; however, it causes short term

memory loss and mental fogginess for me....this bothers me quite a bit

because it makes me feel stupid! We've reduced the dose to the least

amount that is still effective. Every med I take has some side effect.

Some of the meds I've taken have a side effect that is worse than the

disease, e.g., methotrexate and Arava.

Hi ,

I'm the same way, I'm so foggy from the Neurontin that I get my days

of the week mixed up sometimes. Makes it very awkward and embarassing

when you're trying to make appointments! I feel stupid too even

though I know it's the drugs, not my mind disintegrating. It's bad

enough having your body betray you without your brain joining in.

I started taking Neurontin a little over a year ago. I started out on 300mg and

in June my Pain doc upped it to 1800-2400mg a day.

I noticed that it really didn't matter the dose it did increase the loss of my

short term memory. I understand what said by it makes me feel stupid.

I now am cutting my dose, currently on 1200mg. It has helped some with the

pain.

Hugs,
